Abstract

In a double-cylinder circular knitting machine adapted for reciprocatory knitting and having cast-off sinkers (10) provided with butts (100) controlled by a pair of cam rings (12, 13) the butts (100) are controlled in the region of a needle lowering cam by means of a channel in a slider (15) whose vertical position is adjustable, eg by a rod actuated by a cam operated by a stepping motor. The slider (15) may occupy different settings for rotary and reciprocatory knitting. <IMAGE>

Description

2272003 CIRCULAR KNITTING MACHINE The invention relates to a device which
serves to set the degree of opening of cast-off sinkers in a double-cylinder circular knitting machine, preferably for producing hosiery, during rotational and reversal knitting, wherein the cast-off sinkers are controlled by internal and external cam rings which open and close them in connection with knitting of the stitches.
Double-cylinder circular knitting machines producing hosiery goods are known to have cast-off sinkers controlled by sinker cam rings so that they fulfill the conditions necessary to lay the threads during the rotational run and also the conditions to lay the threads during the reversal run and at the same time to prevent that the threads are caught by the non-operating cast-off sinkers, i.e. by the sinkers that correspond to the needles lifted to a non-operational position. But such double-cylinder machines then require different sinker cam rings for different thread type and thickness that respects the particular depth of cast-off i.e. opening of the cast-off sinkers. This has the disadvantage that exchange is needed when said knitting materials are used.
Also, double-cylinder circular knitting machines for the knitting of socks are known, which have, apart from the cast-off sinkers, also the socalled 11bluffsinkers". Such "bluff-sinkers" are put into operation during the reversal knitting to prevent the thread from being caught in the open disengaging sinkers that belong to the non-operating heel needles. A disadvantage of such machines is that, if the "bluff-sinkers" or disengaging sinkers are damaged, bad damages are caused and the machine has to be disassembled and cleaned.
It is an object of this invention to avoid the above mentioned disadvantages which is substantially accomplished in that the machine is equipped with a cam 5520GB channel adjustable by gliding that is used to guide firmly the butts of the castoff sinkers situated at the point where the cast-off sinkers get open.
An advantage of the invention consists in that by adjusting said cam channel it is possible to ensure the necessary putting out of the castoff sinkers both during the rotational and the reversal run of the machine, whereby the double thread catching by the cast-off sinkers during the reversal run is prevented and sufficient opening of the cast- off sinkers during the rotational run ensures a proper laying of the thread, especially in case of plated goods.
A preferred embodiment of a device according to this invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial axial section of the lower needle cylinder of a double-cylinder machine, and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic illustration of the sinker cam rings and cans positions as they are used to control needles. - A known double-cylinder two-system circular knitting machine used to produce hosiery goods is equipped with a lower needle cylinder 1 and an upper needle cylinder (not shown). In the needle cylinders are provided longitudinal grooves in which are situated needles 2 and needle sinkers 3 used for their guidance. To explain the invention, only the stitch forming cams for rotational knitting in the main knitting system are shown.
These are a sinking cam 4 (Figure 2), compensating cams 5, 6, a lifting cam 7 in the path of upper butts 30 of the needle sinkers 3, a removing cam 8 and a lifting cam 9 in the path of lower butts 31 of the needle sinkers 3.
The machine is further equipped with cast-off sinkers 10 placed in a grooved collar 11. Butts 100 of 0 1 5520GB the cast-off sinkers 10 are governed by an external cam ring 12 and an internal cam ring 13 which form the known path 130 to open and close the cast-off sinkers 10 in relation to the movement of the needles 2 during knitwear knitting.
A part of the path 130 is formed by a cam channel 14 which is formed in a slider 15 and is adjustable by gliding. The cam channel 14 has the width of the butt 100 of the cast-off sinker 10, the slider 15 protruding into the recess of said cam rings 12, 13. The slider 15 is axially movable in a bushing 16, and is spring-loaded against it by a spring (not shown) placed in a hole 150. The slider 15 is controlled by a rod 152 and by a cam (not shown) acting on it, governed e.g. by a stepping motor. The slider 15 or the cam channel 14 is arranged behind the section marked by the straight line C and extends up to the place at the level of the straight line D after which the path 130 of the cam rings 12 and 13 causes full closing of the cast-off sinkers 10 and thereby the cast-off of the formed stitches. The position of the cam channel 14 in the slider 15 corresponds to the arrangement of the functional edge of the sinking cam 4 which forms the stitch and further, the arrangement of the compensating cams 5, 6 therefore corresponds to the section when the lower needles 2 are below the level of the cast-off level.
During rotational knitting in the direction S the cast-off sinkers 10 are open in the section between the straight lines B and A owing to laying the threads, and thereafter, in the section between the straight lines A and C, they are so loaded that the tips of their beaks reach behind the stems of the needles 2. But as the laid thread is led above them this slight closing has no influence on the knitwear. The cam channel 14 is put out according to a program as shown by a dashed line in Figure 5520GB is 2.50 that the cast-off sinkers io are open during sinking of a stitch and its stabilization, so that they keep a stable and sufficiently broad cast- off plane and the sunk threads, especially in case of plating, can be suitably lined up without any regard to their thickness and sequence. In the section behind the straight line D the cast-off sinkers 10 are then fully closed by the edge of the upper cam ring 12 to cast-off the stitches.
In case of reversal knitting, the dam channel 14 is moved according to a program as shown by solid lines so that it causes that the cast-off sinkers are in this section opened only minimally. For the forward movement S, the cast-off sinkers 10 are opened in the section between the straight lines C and D, owing to the possibility of the thread to get into the cast-off sinkers 10 belonging to the non-operable lifted needles 2, so as it is done by a firmly formed path 130 in the section between the straight lines B and E for the opposite direction of turning than the forward movement S.
The cam channel 14, which can be adjusted by moving, can preferably also be formed in the other knitting system at the place where the cast-off sinkers 10 are opened. This second knitting system is functional only during rotational knitting. In case of reversal knitting, when out of operation, the cam channel 14 is moved so that it forms a non-opening of the cast-off sinkers 10 and excludes so the possibility to catch the thread twice and thereby of a defect also in this nonknitting system, which is the case sometimes, in case of special thread types or weave types.
