Abstract
227,157. Spence, W. L. Sept. 26, 1923. Crank-actuated pumps; counterbalances. - In radial-cylinder pumps with cylinders at 90‹ and opposed pistons connected by slotted crossheads which engage a common crank with counterweight, the balance is effected by arranging an additional weight on the counterweight which will be equivalent to the weight of a single piston line, including the two pistons and the connecting- crosshead, concentrated at the crank radius. In the air engine shown each piston B, B<1> is an aluminium casting or a thin steel-plate, cupped pressing lightened by tooling or grinding. The lower piston may be closed by a welded-on disc. The piston-rods C, C<1> are thinly webbed and staved to the slotted T-section crossheads and are each made in one piece therewith by drop forging, pressing, or welding. The rod ends are tapered within the pistons, screwed, and secured by nuts. The piston lines have equal weight, but coaxial pistons may be of different diameters or weights. The admission is effected by a rotary valve having two sets of ports for forward and reverse running which is driven by helical gearing F<2> on the main shaft, and which is moved longitudinally by air pressure for reversal. The exhaust is controlled by the piston and passes to an annular exhaust box or silencer K<4> shown with the cover removed. Specification 193,245, [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.], is referred to.
