Abstract
A covering panel 1 for changing the appearance of an interior surface such as a door or drawer front comprises a sheet of plastics material comprising a planar portion 2 and a raised portion 4, formed by deformation of a portion of the sheet. The sheet may be deformed by vacuum forming. The thickness of the sheet is between 0.5 and 1.5 mm, and preferably between 0.8 and 1.2 mm. The sheet may have a plastics foil applied to it to give a wood-grain effect or the like. The sheet may be attached to the surface by means of an adhesive sheet (18, fig 3), or by liquid adhesive, and it may be trimmed to size before attachment. <IMAGE>
Description
Covering panels
The invention relates to covering panels for changing the appearance of interior surfaces.
It is often desirable to change the appearance of interior surfaces, such as the front surfaces of the doors and drawers of kitchen units. However, the invention is not limited to kitchens, and in this specification the words "interior surface" include any indoor surface, including the interior surfaces of walls and doors, and the surfaces of any item of furniture.
The invention seeks to enable the appearance of interior surfaces to be changed in a particularly convenient and cost effective manner.
According to the invention there is provided a covering panel for changing the appearance of an interior surface, comprising a sheet of plastics material having a thickness of between 0.5mm and 1.5mm for attaching to said interior surface, the sheet having a planar portion and a raised portion, formed by deformation of a portion of the sheet, which projects outwardly from the planar portion.
It will be appreciated that the thickness of the sheet allows the sheet to be easily trimmed by a user to the required shape, for example using a sharp knife.
Ideally, the sheet has a thickness of between 0.8mm and 1.2mm.
Preferably, the raised portion is raised by at least 0.6mm from the planar portion.
Conveniently, the sheet is vacuum formed.
Preferably, the sheet is of substantially uniform thickness.
The covering panel may further comprise a foil, such as a wood grain foil, which has been applied to the outside surface of the sheet at elevated temperature and pressure in order to change the appearance of the sheet.
The foil is preferably formed from a plastics material.
The raised portion may extend around a closed loop so that the planar position is divided into an inner planar portion lying within the closed loop and an outer planar portion lying outside of the closed loop.
The closed loop may be of generally rectangular shape.
The covering panel may further comprise a layer of adhesive material attached to the planar portion on the opposite side of the sheet to the raised portion, and a covering sheet for covering the layer of adhesive material until the covering panel is required to be attached to said interior surface.
Preferably, the layer of adhesive material extends over substantially the whole of the planer portion.
The invention also provides a method of changing the appearance of an interior surface, the method comprising attaching a covering panel as described above to the interior surface so as to cover at least a portion thereof.
The method may comprise attaching the planar portion of the sheet of plastics material to the interior surface by means of a tape, or sheet of adhesive material both sides of which are adhesive, or by means of a liquid adhesive.
The method may include the step of trimming the covering panel to the desired shape before attaching it to the interior surface.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a covering panel for covering the door of a kitchen unit;
Figure 2 shows a covering panel for covering the front surface of a kitchen drawer; and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of either of the covering panels shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The covering panels 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 each comprise a planar portion 2 which is divided by a raised portion 4 into an inner planar portion 6 and an outer planar portion 8.
The raised portion 4 comprises a curved top portion 10, and extends along a generally rectangular loop. The raised portion 4 is formed with a number of ridges 12 extending along its length, as shown in Figure 3, and projects a distance of 1.2cm above the planar portion 2.
The covering panels are formed from a sheet of plastics material having a thickness of about lmm which is deformed by means of a vacuum moulding process so as to produce the raised portion 4. However, before the sheet of plastics material is deformed as so-called "hot stamped foil" is applied to the front surface 14 of the sheet at elevated temperature and pressure in order to change the appearance of the front surface 14 of the sheet. A range of different foils may be used including plain coloured foils, patterned foils, and wood-grain foils which cause the covering panels to appear to be formed of wood.
Suitable foils are supplied by Leonard Kurz (UK) Limited of Penfold Works, Imperial Way, Watford, WD2 4YY. If a woodgrain foil is used, the raised portion 4 of each covering panel gives the appearance of being formed from a number of carved strips of wood which have been attached to the covering panel. Covering panels to which a foil has not been applied may also be used.
Once the foil has been applied to the sheet of plastics material, the sheet is heated until it becomes pliable and is then sucked against a suitable mould by means of a vacuum which is applied to a large number of small holes formed in the mould. The mould is formed with raised regions which emboss the sheet so as to form the raised portions 4. The mould is large enough to form several panels simultaneously from a single sheet of plastics material which is then cut to form a number of individual panels. The panels may be formed from a range of different plastics materials including refrigeration grade styrene and acrylate styrene acrylonitrile.
The rear surface 16 of the sheet is covered with a double-sided adhesive layer 18 for attaching the panel to a kitchen door or drawer. The adhesive layer 18 is covered by a thin covering sheet 20 formed of paper and/or plastics material, which can be easily peeled away by a user in order to expose the adhesive layer 18. The adhesive layer 18 and covering sheet 20 are preferably formed in two parts which respectively cover the inner and outer planar portions 6 and 8, although for convenience the adhesive layer 18 and covering sheet 20 may be formed to extend over the whole area of the covering panel, including across the back of the raised portion 4. As an alternative layer 18. In this case the panels may be attached to the kitchen doors and drawers by means of separate double-sided adhesive tape, or liquid adhesive.
The covering panels are sufficiently thin to enable them to be cut to the required size and shape before use by means of a suitable sharp knife. A further advantage of forming the covering panels from such a thin sheet of plastics material is that the raised portions 4 can undergo considerable deformation without cracking or breaking, and without any noticeable change in appearance of the front surface 14 of the panels. The covering panels are therefore particularly durable and suitable for use in environments where there is a high chance of the raised portions 4 undergoing a considerable impact.
The covering panels shown in Figures 1 and 2 are particularly suitable for doors and drawers of kitchen units, but it will be appreciated that covering panels according to the invention may be applied to any item of furniture, and even to the interior surfaces of walls and doors.
Claims (14)
1. A covering panel for changing the appearance of an interior surface, comprising a sheet of plastics material having a thickness of between 0.5mm and 1.5mm for attaching to said interior surface, the sheet having a planar portion and a raised portion, formed by deformation of a portion of the sheet, which projects outwardly from the planar portion.
2. A covering panel as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sheet has a thickness of between 0.8mm and 1.2mm.
3. A covering panel as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the raised portion is raised by at least 0.6mm from the planar portion.
4. A covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the sheet is vacuum formed.
5. A covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the sheet is of substantially uniform thickness.
6. A covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim, which further comprises a foil, such as a wood grain foil, which has been applied to the outside surface of the sheet at elevated temperature and pressure in order to change the appearance of the sheet.
7. A covering panel as claimed in claim 6, wherein the foil is formed from a plastics material.
8. A covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the raised portion extends around a closed loop so that the planar position is divided into an inner planar portion lying within the closed loop and an outer planar portion lying outside of the closed loop.
9. A covering panel as claimed in claim 8, wherein the closed loop is of generally rectangular shape.
10. A covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim, which further comprises a layer of adhesive material attached to the planar portion on the opposite side of the sheet to the raised portion, and a covering sheet for covering the layer of adhesive material until the covering panel is required to be attached to said interior surface.
11. A covering panel as claimed in claim 10, wherein the layer of adhesive material extends over substantially the whole of the planer portion.
12. A method of changing the appearance of an interior surface, the method comprising attaching a covering panel as claimed in any preceding claim to the interior surface so as to cover at least a portion thereof.
13. A method as claimed in claim 12, which further comprises attaching the planar portion of the sheet of plastics material to the interior surface by means of a tape or sheet of adhesive material both sides of which are adhesive, or by means of a liquid adhesive.
14. A method as claimed in claim 12 or 13, which further includes the step of trimming the covering panel to the desired shape before attaching it to the interior surface.
