Abstract

An implement usable as a hammer or as a gripping extension of a bar has a shank (10) with a gripping region (12) at one end and a head (11) at the opposite end. The head (11) has end faces (20, 21) for striking objects when the implement is used as a hammer and possesses a recess (22) for engaging with the bar. The gripping region 12 includes portions of larger diameter than the main pan of the shank 10 with bevelled surfaces 16 leading to or forming depression 17 therebetween. <IMAGE>

Description

AN IMPLEMENT The present invention relates to a tool or implement which has particular application in the scaffolding industry.

According to the invention there is provided a multi-purpose implement comprising a shank with a head at one end and a gripping region at the other end wherein the head has a recess therein for fitting to an elongate component such as a bar to form an extension of the component to enable the component to be manipulated and the head can be otherwise used as a hammer.

The invention may be understood more readily, and various other features of the invention may become apparent, from consideration of the following description.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a front view of an implement constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the implement shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an end view of the implement shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The implement shown in the drawing is composed of a cylindrical shank 10 with a head 11 at one end. The end of the shank 10 remote from the head 11 is provided with a shaped gripping region 12. More particularly the gripping region 12 has three portions 13, 14, 15 of slightly larger diameter than the main body of the shank 10. Frusto-conical bevelled surfaces 16 are provided between the portions 13, 14, 15 to provide depressions 17. Another frusto-conical bevelled surface 18 smoothly joins the portion 15 to the main body of the shank 10 and the end portion 13 has a small bevelled edge 19.

The head 11 is secured rigidly to the shank 10 and takes the form of a rectangular block with end surfaces 20, 21 for striking an object. At the centre of the head 11 there is a rectangular recess 22 open from the region opposite the shank 10 and with a bottom wall 23 within the head 11.

During use the implement can be gripped with the region 12 and employed as a hammer to strike objects.

The recess 22 is adapted to receive a bar (not shown) to enable the implement to act as an extension to the bar and the gripping region 12 then enables a user to turn or otherwise manipulate the bar. The implement is particularly useful in scaffolding erection.

Claims

1. A multi-purpose implement comprising a shank with a head at one end and a gripping region at the other end wherein the head has a recess therein for fitting to an elongate component, such as a bar, to form an extension of the component to enable the component to be manipulated and the head can be otherwise used as a hammer.

2. An implement according to Claim 1, wherein the shank is circular in cross-section and the gripping region is composed of portions of large diameter than the main part of the shank with bevelled surfaces leading to or forming depressions therebetween.

3. An implement according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the head is a rectangular block with end faces for striking when the implement is used as a hammer and the recess is provided in a surface of the head remote from the shank and in alignment with the shank.
