Abstract

A flexible mudmat is made from cable nets and geotextile membrane covering which is stitched or bonded to the cables and fixed to the bottom of an offshore structure by means of pad eyes and shackles, to provide both temporary and permanent foundations for offshore structures. A soil retaining structure made from the same cable and membrane system surrounds such mudmats and is fixed to the legs of the structure by means of padeyes and shackles. These mudmat systems are lighter in weight than the conventional rigid mud mats which are constructed from steel, timber or aluminium, are fixed to the bottom of the structure and rest on or in the soil to provide support. As a result sea transport and installation costs are reduced. <IMAGE>

Description

FLEXIBLE MtJDMATS FOR OFFSHORE STRUCTURES This invention relates to the temporary and permanent foundations of an offshore structure.
Conventional offshore structures are founded on rigid foundations (mudmats) during installation and piling operations, which are constructed from steel, timber or aluminium.
The mudmats are fixed to the bottom of the jacket structure and rest on or in the soil to provide support for the structure.
In such constructions, the costs of sea transport and installation operations, including barge and tug rentals, pile driving, crane ship charter etc., are a very significant proportion of the total cost of the platform. In particular, when installing platforms on weak soils, very soft to firm clays, silts and loose silty sands, large mudmat areas are required which are very heavy and therefore result in the sea transport and installation costs being a significant proportion of the structure fabrication and equipment purchase cost.
Profitable exploitation of marginal oil and gas fields calls for cost savings in all areas of the development and there thus exists a strong incentive to economise on the sea transport and lifting costs by reducing the weight of the structure.
The same requirement to reduce costs exists for offshore platforms constructed for defence, communications and observation purposes.
The present invention relates to the use of. flexible mudmats, made from cable nets and geotextile membrane cover, to provide both temporary and permenant foundations for offshore structures which are lighter in weight than the conventional rigid mudmats and therefore reduce sea transport and installation costs.
Thus, according to the present invention there is provided a flexible foundation for offshore structures consisting of a net made from cable net with a geotextile membrane covering which is stitched or bonded to the cables and connected to the bottom of the structure. A soil retaining structure made from the same cable and membrane system surrounds such mudmats and is fixed to the legs of the structure by means of padeyes and shackles.
Means of connecting together the cables to form the net and the membrane cover are provided.
The invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings which show, on elevation, general view of the mudmat and details of the connections.
Figure 1 shows the flexible mudmat in its final service configuration.
Figures 2(a), 2(b), 2(c) shows the components of the cubical nodal connection.
Figure 3 shows the arrangement of the cylindrical connection.
Figure 4 shows the arrangement of the soil retaining structures.
While the shape of the flexible mudmat shown is triangular, other shapes (e.g. square, circular etc.) are possible according to the structure requirements and other net configurations are also possible.
The flexible mudmat can be connected to the structure using conventional padeyes and shackles.
The flexible mudmat can be used for both permanent and temporary support on any soil for offshore structures.
