Abstract

An organic solvent (eg. isopropyl acetate) solution carries as an essential ingredient, a compound (eg. trichloroisocyanuric acid) which will react with water after it has been deposited from solution upon and within the weave of a fabric which has become contaminated with mould stains, even when that fabric has been water-proofed, as in the case of a shower curtain. Reaction with water results in the liberation of an agent whose bleaching action results in the effective removal of the stains.

Description

Removal of Mould Stains from Shower Curtains and other Fabrics This invention relates to the removal of mould stains from shower curtains and other textile fabrics.
Textile shower curtains, sooner or later, are almost invariably infected by mould spores. The resultant growths may be inhibited or even removed by normal washing, but the problem of removal of the residual stains is virtually intractable, employing any of the obvious or readily available remedies such as the use of household bleach, or peroxy chemicals. This is seen to be due to the fact that these agents are water borne whilst the shower curtains are normally water-proofed by one means or another, to satisfy the obvious need for such an item to be water repellant. As a result no water based treatment is able to penetrate the weave of the fabrics which are so easily penetrated by the mould spores. Other items such as bathroom curtains or blinds can present similar problems, as well as textile items used in camping or caravanning activities. Not all of the latter will have been water-proofed, but in some cases it will not be practicable to wash them in the normal manner, and even when it is, the staining will be resistant to removal by washing alone.
According to the present invention, a means of overcoming these problems when they arise, is seen to lie in the use of a suitable active agent, carried in an organic solvent which will not be impeded by the water repellancy of the fabric. Thus if the solution of the active agent is sprayed onto the stained areas, it will be possible to thoroughly wet them out. After treatment the stained item is left to allow the solvent to evaporate, when a coating of the active ingredient is left in intimate contact both on and within the weave of the fabric. This coating being hydrophilic in character, counteracts the hydrophobic nature of the proofing agent carried by the fabric. Thus if the item is now sprayed with, or when practicable, immersed in a generous excess of water, it is able to fully penetrate the fabric. If the active ingredient is such that it is reacted upon by the water to liberate an effective bleaching agent, that agent will be able to act upon the stains. Such an effect is produced by the use of trichloroisocyanuric acid dissolved in isopropyl acetate, a combination which has been shown to provide an optimum combination of attributes when used for this application, and which when used as described, liberates hypochlorous acid, an effective bleaching agent.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS What I claim is:1. An organic solvent solution in which the solvent can overcome hydrophobic agents and which is free of hydroxyl or other groups which would cause it to react with water sensitive solutes. The solute will in the presence of water release an effective agent for the removal of mould stains from textile fabrics or other vulnerable surfaces, both with or without water proofing.
  2. 2. An organic solvent solution as claimed in Claim 1. in which the essential ingredient is an organic chlorine compound which is reacted upon by water, to liberate hypochlorous acid.
  3. 3. An organic solvent solution as claimed in Claims 1. and 2. in which the solvent employed is isopropyl acetate.
  4. 4. A organic solvent solution as claimed in Claims 1. 2. and 3. in which the organic chlorine compound is trichloroisocyanuric acid.
