Abstract

226,535. Martin, L. J. H. Dec. 17, 1923, [Convention date]. Windows and the like, cleaning.-Apparatus in which a squeegee is moved over the screen by a continuously-driven endless cable or chain comprises a channel-shaped plate 1 fixed by lugs 3 to the upper part of the windscreen frame 4 and having at its ends spindles 20, 21 carrying pulleys 18, 19. An I-shaped bar 5 is fixed centrally of the plate 1 and ends near the spindles 20, 21, thus forming an endless guide 8, 9 for a carriage 6 having rollers 7 and carrying on a pivot pin 11 a resilient arm 12 having pivoted to it the squeegee 14. A stud 16 on the carriage is secured to the endless cable 17 passing over the pulleys 18, 19, the carriage being semicircular in shape so as to pass round the curved ends 1<b> of the plate 1. The wiper is in contact with the glass 2 only when the carriage 6 is in the part 8 of the guide, and this part is shaped so as to give a slight tilt to the carriage to press the wiper on the glass. In use the arm 12 abuts against a pin 15 on the carriage, due to the frictional resistance of the squeegee, but it can be swung into a horizontal position when not required. The pulley 18 is driven by a belt 22 from a pulley 23 mounted on a support 24 carrying a bayonet socket 25 taking a plug 27 on a rotatable rod 28. A spring 31 forces a square part 28<a> of the rod 28 into engagement with a slot 30 in the pulley 23, and fixed to the rod is a, flexible shaft 29 driven from the vehicle engine. In a modification, Fig. 6, the pulley 18 is driven, by a roller 39 on a shaft 38 having a square part 38a slidable in the support 24 and driven from the flexible shaft by pinions 42, 41. The pulley is pressed towards the roller by a spring 40, and by altering the distance of the roller from the shaft 20 the speed of the pulley may be varied. To stop the wiper the roller 39 is wholly removed from the pulley 18, the pulley being bevelled to allow the roller to be returned. The speed regulating device may be fitted between the rotating part of the vehicle engine and the flexible shaft 29. The guide 8, 9 may be arranged at the lower edge of the screen, and the device may be mounted on screens of the sharp front or V-shaped type, the guide being shaped to correspond with the edge of the screen and having rollers at the points where the direction of the cable 17 is changed.
