Description

STRUCTURE FOR STITCHING A TETHER BELT TO AN AIR BAG
Field of the Invention 2263448
The present invention relates to a structure for stitching a tether belt to an air bag for use in a vehicular air bag assembly. More particularly, it is directed to a structure by which a tether belt can firmly be stitched to an air bag.
Description of the Related Art
As is well known, an air bag assembly includes an air bag adapted to be extended to protect an occupant in the event, for example, of a vehicle collision. The air bag assembly also includes a tether belt stitched to the air bag to ensure that the air bag is extended to a predetermined shape. Japanese laid-open utility model publication No. Sho 64-41463 discloses a detailed structure for stitching a tether belt to an air bag.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a passenger air bag in its inflated condition. An air bag 16 has an opening 12. Flanges 14 are mounted in the opening 12 and secured to a container (not shown) by bolts or rivets. The air bag 16 is inflated as shown in Fig. 2 when gas flows from an inflator (not shown) through the opening 12 into the air bag 16. 18 denotes a vent hole.
1 In order to prevent the central front portion of the air bag 16 from projecting toward an occupant, a tether belt 20 extends from the central front portion of the air bag 16 to a portion of the air bag 16 adjacent to the opening 12. The tether belt 20 is stitched to the front of the air bag 16 by thteads 19.
Conventionally, the threads 19 used to stitch the tether belt to the front of the air bag project from the outer front surface of the air bag 20 as shown in Fig. 3.
An occupant may feel uncomfortable when portions of the threads 19 projecting from the outer surface of the air bag contact with the face of the occupant in case of a vehicle collision.
Object and Summary of the Invention
It is an object of the present invention to prevent contact of threads for stitching a tether belt with an occupant.
According to a first feature of invention, a tether belt is located within an air bag and has one end stitched to the air bag. With this structure, the inner surface of the air bag extends inwardly to provide a piece to which the tether belt is stitched.
According to a second feature of the invention, the air bag is composed of pieces of cloth and has an overlapped portion located within the air bag and stitched together. The 2 overlapped portion forms the piece of the air bag.
According to a third feature of the invention, a loop extends inwardly from the inner surface of the air bag and has base ends stitched together to form the piece of the air bag.
With the structure of the present invention, no thread is exposed to or projects from the outer surface of the air bag as the tether belt is stitched to the piece of the air bag. Thus, an occupant is free from injury due to the threads if the air bag is brought into contact with the occupant.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figs. IA, IB and 1C are schematic sectional views showing the manner in which a tether belt is stitched to an air bag according to embodiments of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a passenger air bag in its inflated condition; Fig. 3 is a schematic sectional view of a tether belt stitched to an air bag in a conventional manner; Figs. 4A, 4B and 4C are schematic sectional views showing the manner in which a tether belt is stitched to an air bag according to different embodiments of the present invention; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a structure for stitching a tether belt to an air bag according to another embodiment of the invention; and 3 Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a structure for stitching a tether belt to an air bag according to a further embodiment of the invention.
Preferred Embodiments The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1A, a loop 30 extends inwardly from the inner surface of an air bag 16. The loop 30 has base ends stitched together by a thread 32. A tether belt 201 is stitched to the loop 30 by threads 34. Alternatively, the loop 30 may be stitched by threads 36 to the inner front surface of the air bag 16 as shown in Figs. 1B and 1C.
Figs. 4A to 4C are schematic view-5, in section, of different structures for stitching a tether belt to an air bag according to the present invention. In the embodiments shown in Figs. 4A to 4C, an air bag 16'' is composed of two pieces of cloth 16A and 16B stitched together and has an overlapped portion 40 to which the tether belt 20 is stitched.
The overlapped portion 40 may alternatively be stitched to the air bag as shown in Figs. 4B and 4C. In Fig. 4, 34 denotes threads used to stitch the tether belt 20. 32 denotes thrpads used to stitch the overlapped portion of the air bag. 36 4 denotes threads used to stitch the overlapped portion 40 to the inner front of the air bag.
In the embodiments shown in Figs. 4A to 4C, the overlapped portion 40 may have an equal width along one side of the air bag 16'' as shown in Fig. 5. As shown in Fig. 6, the overlapped portion 40 of an air bag 16111 may alternatively have an elongated tongue 50 to which a tether belt 20' is stitched.
In the foregoing embodiments, the air bag is designed for use in a passenger air bag assembly. The present invention is also applicable to a driver's Air bag.
With the structure of the present invention thus described, no tether belt stitching thread projects from the outer surface of the air bag. Thus, an occupant does not feel uncomfortable from such threads when the extended air bag is brought into contact with the occupant.
