Abstract
226,329. Bender, W. A., and Parkinson, Ltd., F. & A. Nov. 2, 1923. Alternating-current induction machines; motors, controlling.-The stator winding of a single-phase induction motor comprises four sections, Fig. 1, arranged so that at starting the pair of sections AB, AD together produce a number of poles and the sections BC, BD produce a similar field angularly displaced from the field due to the first set; in the running condition, the current through one section of each pair is reversed without changing the connections of the sections with one another so that the combined sections produce a different number of poles. The necessary phase displacement at starting may be obtained by the use of condensers, choking coils, or a resistance EGF. At starting the lines are connected to the points E, C, and the point F is connected to the points B, D. In the running condition, the lines are connected to the points B, D. Fig. 2 shows a winding adapted to give 6 poles for starting and 4 poles for running. Winding ends 1, 5 correspond to point A, ends 2, 3 to point B, ends 7, 6 to point D, and ends 4, 8 to point C. When operating on the lower number of poles there are two slots at the centre of each pole in which the currents oppose each other. This arrangement is stated to produce a field form approaching a true sine wave.
