Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS The present invention relates to a telecommunications device and to a telecommunications system, and is concerned particularly although not exclusively with a portable telecommunications device and a telecommunications system incorporating a portable telecommunications device.
Portable telecommunications devices, such as portable telephones are widely used to allow access into the telephone network from locations where no fixed connection to the telephone network exists. Such mobile telephones operate by transmitting and receiving radio signals which are relayed through receiver/transmitter units connected to the telephone network.
Such mobile telephones are relatively expensive as compared with conventional telephones which are permanently connected to the telephone network. One reason for this is that the portable telephones must have a rechargeable power source arranged to provide electrical power to the telephone.
An advantage of being able to connect to the telephone system at locations remote from any fixed telephone connection is that should the user for example breakdown in his car in a remote area or should the user be in danger and not able to reach a fixed telephone, help can be sought via the telephone network by accessing it with the mobile telephone.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a telecommunications device comprising transmission means arranged to transmit a transmission signal, a power source arranged to provide electrical power to the device, and disabling means arranged to disable the device.
The disabling means may be arranged to disable the device by reception of a remote termination signal.

Said information may be stored in a memory of the device.
The device may include speaker means and preferably includes microphone means. The speaker means and/or the microphone means may comprise piezo-electric transducers.
In a preferred arrangement, the device comprises a portable telephone, having a speaker, a microphone, transmission means, reception means, a memory and a power source, the device being arranged to automatically transmit to an operator, one or more signals upon breakage of a seal on the device, the power source being arranged to cease provision of electrical power to the device at a pre-determined time after reception of a remote termination signal, the arrangement being such that between breakage of the seal and cessation of the provision of electrical power to the device, the device is arranged to transmit and receive signals.
The device may include re-dial means which, when activated, causes one or more transmitted signals to be repeated.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a telecommunications system comprising a first telecommunications device and a control unit, the first telecommunications device and the control unit being arranged to communicate with each other, the control unit being arranged to send a termination signal to the first telecommunications device to disable the first telecommunications device.
The first telecommunications device may be portable.
The control unit may be arranged to send a termination signal to the first telecommunications device which, after a pre-determined period of time, causes a power supply of the first telecommunications device to cease provision of electrical power to the first telecommunications device The first telecommunications device and the control unit may be arranged to communicate with each other via radio signals and/or other electromagnetic signals transmitted through cables and/or other media.
The control unit may be arranged to control communication of the first telecommunications device with a remote destination.
The control unit may be arranged to facilitate communication of the first telecommunications device with a second telecommunications device.
Said second telecommunications device may be identified by said first telecommunications device.
A plurality of second telecommunications devices may be identified by the first telecommunications device.
There may be provided a plurality of first telecommunications devices, each having a unique identity code which is recognised by the control unit.
The plurality of first telecommunications devices may each communicate with the control unit by means of radio signals at separate radio frequencies. The radio frequencies may comprise the identity codes.
The control unit may comprise a human operator.
The first and/or second telecommunications devices may be as described in any statement herein.
The device may be as stated in any statement herein.
The invention also includes a telecommunications device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of operating a telecommunications device the method comprising transmitting a transmission signal and disabling the device.
The method may comprise disabling the device by reception of a remote termination signal or automatically after a predetermined time interval.
The invention also includes a method substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing.
The invention also includes telecommunications system substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows, schematically, a portable telecommunications device according to an embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a portable telecommunications device, in this case a telephone, is shown generally at 10. The telephone comprises a controller 11, an electrically erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM) 12, a timer unit 13, a power source 14 having a condition indicator 15, a radio-receiver 16 and a radio transmitter 17 both connected to an aerial 18, a speaker 19, a mouthpiece-microphone 20 and a re-dial unit 21.
In use, the device is intended to act as a disposable useonce portable telephone. At the time of purchase of the device the memory 12 is programmed with two numbers, such as two telephone numbers. In addition, at this time the device is arranged to transmit and receive radio signals at a particular frequency band width.
On breakage of a seal (not shown) of the device the device becomes activated and transmits a radio signal to an operator (not shown) located at a control unit (not shown). The radio signal transmitted by the telephone 10 is relayed to the operator via a conventional receiver unit (not shown) which receives the radio signal and relays it along a conventional telephone line to the operator.
Once the user of the telephone and the operator are connected the operator can connect the user to a desired telephone destination via the conventional telephone network. As soon as the user is connected with his desired location on the telephone network the operator sends a termination signal which is received by the receiver 16 of the telephone, which termination signal causes the controller 11 to activate the timer unit 13.
When the timer unit 13 is activated the power source 14 becomes disconnected after a pre-determined time interval, rendering the telephone 10 inoperable.
It is envisaged that the pre-determined time interval may, for example, be of the order of several minutes. This time interval could be determined at the time of purchase of the device or, for example, at the time of manufacture.
The two telephone numbers stored in the memory 12 at the time of purchase of the telephone 10 are automatically sent to the operator when the telephone 10 is activated.
These telephone numbers will appear on a visual display unit of the operator and can, according to one embodiment of the invention, be used to verify that the user is authorised to use the telephone 10. For example the operator, once connected to the user, may enquire of the user as to what is one of the telephone numbers stored in the memory. An unauthorised user will not possess this information and may therefore be refused connection to his desired destination on the telephone network.
In addition, the telephone numbers have a second function in that, should the user be unable to speak due, perhaps, to an accident or other dangerous circumstances, the operator has two telephone numbers which have been chosen by the user at the time of purchase of the telephone 10, which telephone numbers can be contacted by the operator to provide assistance for the user.
Once connected to the operator and subsequently to the required destination on the telephone network, the user is able to speak and hear in the manner of a conventional telephone conversation via speaker 19 and mouthpiece 20 with the radio signals corresponding to the speech being transmitted via transmitter 17 and received by receiver 16.
The telephone 10 is further provided with the condition indicator 15 which indicates the condition of the power source 14. For example a series of light emitting diodes may be arranged to indicate an amount of time left before the power source is disconnected. Alternatively or additionally there may be provided an audible indication-.
The condition indicator may advantageously be arranged to provide an indication that the power source is either defective or close to expiry, for example, when the device has not been used for some time after purchase and the power source has become depleted. In addition, the redial unit 21 comprises a button located on an outward surface (not shown) of the telephone 10 which enables the user to re-dial the operator should there be an inadvertent disconnection.
It is envisaged that a fixed number of frequency bandwidths could be provided, each telephone 10 being arranged, at the time of purchase, to operate at a unique frequency bandwidth, which frequency bandwidth would become re-available once the telephone 10 had been used.
Information about available frequency band widths may be stored in a central data base and may be automatically updated when a frequency becomes re-available for use.
Although the telephone 10 has been discribed as disposable after use, alternatively it may be returned to a supplier to have the power source replenished and/or reconnected and, if necessary, new telephone numbers programmed into the memory.
The apparatus advantageously allows a person stranded at a location remote from any point on the telephone network to raise help via the telephone network, such as a person with a broken down vehicle or a person who is injured.
In the case of elderly or infirm users an extra code may be transmitted to the operator on breakage of the seal, to inform the operator that the user is either elderly or infirm and that, therefore, the user is likely to need assistance and may not be able to speak for example. In an extra identity code which identifies the user to a supervisor responsible for the welfare of that user.
Although the apparatus has been described as a telephone device, it will be understood that the apparatus may equally comprise a facsimile or other telecommunications device.
An advantage of the device is that since there is no permanent dedicated telephone line to the device there are no ongoing subscription fees to be paid. The usage of the device is paid for in its entirety when the device is purchased.
