Abstract

The packaging system comprises an insulating container 1 moulded from one piece of expanded polystyrene with a lid 2 secured by a positive lid lock 3. The container 1 may be enclosed in an outer membrane 4. Inside the container 1 is a raised floor 6, below which is a fluid collecting chamber 7 containing a highly absorbent material 8. The product to be transported is placed in the container 1 on the raised floor 6 and surrounded in ice to preserve the product. The lid is then placed on the container and the closed container is then optionally placed in an outer membrane 4 in the form of a shrink- wrapped bag. The product may now be transported in airfreight or by other means without fear of leakage. <IMAGE>

Description

"Packaging Svstem" This invention relates to a packaging system.
This invention is particularly, but not exclusively, for use in the transportation of food products at low temperatures.
There are stringent regulations in force relating to air freighting of fresh food products such as fish, when ice is used to preserve the product during transit. These regulations seek to ensure that no liquid leakage occurs from the containers used in transporting the product. Previously proposed containers have not been entirely effective in preventing fluid leakage.
The insulating properties required of packaging when transporting products in ice often result in voluminous packaging.
Large quantities of ice are also used to overcome any shortfall in insulation. When transporting products by air freighting or by other means the volume required for packaging are of great commercial importance as more compact packaging may enable more goods to be transported.
An example of a previous packaging system is given in UK Patent 2,194,220 B. Where absorbent pads are placed under the product container and enclosed in an outer box of foldable material. The outer box of such a system is often labour intensive to erect and pack.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the disadvantages of hitherto proposed containers.
According to the present invention there is provided a packaging system for use in transporting products at low temperatures comprising an insulated material container having an opening provided with sealing means in the form of a lid and having a sheet material forming a raised floor for said container for supporting a product above the base of said container and forming a fluid collecting chamber inside said container. Preferably, said container is provided with a vacuum and heat sealed outer membrane.
Preferably also, the container is formed of moulded expanded polystyrene with rounded corners to prevent break off of the corners or puncture of the outer membrane and with a ridge moulded in the base of the container or other means to support the raised floor.
Other materials may be used with the appropriate insulating properties.
Preferably also, the container has a positive lid lock or sealing means to secure the lid of the container and to provide added strength to the container.
Preferably, the raised floor is formed of Correx
material or a similar sheet material with a non-abrasive surface (to protect the contents of the container) and with hygienic, non-absorbent properties.
Preferably, the fluid collecting chamber under the raised floor contains an absorbent material such as Zorbplas pad to absorb excess fluids and ice melt water which drain through to the chamber. The fluids are held inside the container where they may be effective as a coolant. The absorbent material may also substantially prevent fluid seeping through the container base.
Preferably, the container's outer membrane is of 120 micron polyvinyl chloride or a material with similar flexible, hermetically and heat sealable properties.
The packaging is sealed in order to render the packaging hygienic as no fluids may escape, to add further insulating properties, and in order to secure the packaging from unauthorised tampering.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective cross section of the packaging system in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view with a partial cross section of the container of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the opened container of Fig. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated an embodiment of a packaging system for use in transporting products which require to be packed with ice as a preservative, in particular food products such as fresh fish.
The packaging system illustrated involves an insulating container 1 moulded from one piece of expanded polystyrene with a lid 2 secured by a positive lid lock 3. The container 1 is enclosed in an outer membrane 4 which has a sealing valve 5. Inside the container 1 is
a raised floor 6, of Corrextmaterial supported by a raised ridge moulded in the container. Under the raised floor 6 is a fluid collecting chamber 7 containing a highly absorbent material in the form of Zorbplas pads 8.
The product to be transported is placed in the container 1 on the raised floor 6 and surrounded in ice
to preserve the product The Correx/material used for the raised floor 6 protects the product with its non-abrasive surface, for example, if the product is fresh fish the fish are not descaled or harmed in any way by the surface of the floor. The lid is then placed on the container and the closed container is then optionally placed in an outer member of 120 micron polyvinyl chloride 4, in the form of a bag. The outer membrane 4 is vacuum and heat sealed by a valve 5, shrink wrapping the container 1. The product may now be transported in airfreight or by other means without fear of leakage.
During transportation the ice gradually melts, the melting is substantially slower than with conventional forms of packaging as the outer membrane is heat sealed. The fluid drains through or around the raised floor 6 and collects in the fluid collecting chamber 7.
The chamber contains highly absorbent material in the form of Zorbplas pads 8 which hold the fluid in the chamber 7 inside the insulating container. The chilled fluids are retained in close proximity to the product hygienically separated by the raised floor 6, but still acting as an effective coolant.
In the optional embodiment in the unlikely event of any leakage from the insulating container 1 such leakage is contained within the hermetically sealed outer membrane 4. The outer membrane 4 also prevents the odours of the products from permeating into the transporting vehicle and ensures that the products are not unpleasant to handle.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example, the size and shape of the packaging system can be varied to make the system suitable for use in other applications for transporting any product with which problems arise due to fluid accumulation during transit.
