Abstract
As shown in Figure 5, an auger is fitted into a purpose made housing (12). This has been fabricated to house the auger, reduction gearbox (15) and hydraulic motor (13). The body of this auger unit has also been fabricated to fit between the 'jaws' of a clam-shovel bucket (14) to which it is to be fitted to. It is held in position by the jaws of the bucket whilst in operation. When the auger unit is fitted between the jaws of a clam shovel bucket it immediately transforms the clam shovel bucket into a side discharge bucket, allowing various materials to be side discharged. The housing has side cheeks to seal the clam bucket and to help prevent the jaws crushing the housing. <IMAGE>
Description
AUGER UNIT
This invention relates to a self contained hydraulically driven auger attachment.
Side discharge buckets usually have a horizontal power driven auger in the bottom of them. This allows materials e.g. stone, sand, concrete, tarmac etc. to be discharged out of the side of the bucket via a hole in the bucket side at the point where the auger ends.
These buckets are a purpose made bucket and are quite expensive. To change buckets such as for example the front bucket on a J.C.B. can take a considerable amount of time, therefore, quite often not practicable. This invention allows a clam shell, clam shovel, 4 in 1, 6 in 1 type buckets and the like to be rapidly transformed into a side discharge bucket.
This auger unit consists of an auger and its own housing.
The housing of the unit is fabricated to fit the contours of the auger and the contours of the bucket. It is mounted in the jaws of the bucket i.e. a clam shell bucket. The jaws of the bucket are opened and then they are closed on this unit. The auger is now quite securely trapped between the 'jaws' of the bucket. After the necessary hydraulic pipes have been connected the transformation of the bucket is complete and capable of side discharging various materials.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which :
Figure 1 shows the auger unit, front elevation.
Figure 2 shows the left hand and right hand sides of the auger unit.
Figure 3 shows the side view of a clamshovel type bucket with jaws open.
Figure 4 shows the side view of a clamshovel type bucket with theauger unit in position.
Figure 5 shows the front view of the auger unit in working position when fitted between the 'jaws of a clamshovel type bucket.
With reference to- the drawings the auger 10 is housed in the purpose made body 12 which has been fabricated to fit the contours of the clam shovel as well as the contour of the auger. The auger 10 can be of parallel, stepped or tapered construction.
In one end of the auger body there is a hydraulic motor 13 which drives the auger 10. This motor can drive the auger direct or indirectly through a reduction gearbox 15. The auger 10 could be indirectly driven by an engine or hydraulic motor mounted externally and driven by a chain or belt.
The auger unit is attached to the clam shovel bucket by opening the 'jaws' 14 of the clam shovel bucket then closing the 'jaws' 14 of the unit thus gripping the auger unit in the jaws of the bucket. It can also be secured in the jaws of the bucket for example by bolts, pins or catches.
The side cheeks 16 of the auger body prevents the unit from being crushed by the jaws 14 and are made to fit the gap between the jaws 14 and to prevent leakage of materials from the bucket.
Claims (6)
1. An auger unit which comprises of an auger in its own housing. This housing is fabricated to fit the contours and dimensions of the auger and the jaws of the clam-shovel bucket to which it is to be fitted between.
2. An auger unit as claimed in Claim 1 whereby the auger is driven by an external drive and motor.
3. An auger unit as claimed in Claim 1 whereby a hydraulic motor is attached to the end of the auger to drive it.
4. An auger unit as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2 and Claim 3 wherein a reduction gearbox is used between the auger and hydraulic motor to rotate the auger.
5. An auger unit as claimed in any preceding claim. The auger used can be of parallel, stepped or tapered construction.
6. An auger unit substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 5 of the accompanying drawing..
