Apparatus.-In a machine for cutting or slicing grain or other granular material and having a reciprocating receptacle into which the grain &c. is fed and through the perforated bottom of which it passes to the cutting and slicing means, a fixed transversely-extending part in the receptacle holds the grain stationary during the movement of the receptacle in one direction but allows it to move with the receptacle in the opposite direction, during which more grain is fed down in front of the transversely-extending part. As shown, the transversely-extending part is the rear wall of the hopper 2, Figs. 1 and 2, for feeding the grain into the reciprocating box 3 which has a central longitudinal partition 10 integral with or secured to the thin perforated bottom plate 8 of the box. A series of parallel, spaced, and double-edged cutters disposed transversely against the underside of the plate 8 is fixed to the edges of the rectangular frame 4 on which the box slides, and intermeduiate between the cutters is fixed a series of transverse members 13 the top surfaces of which are slightly lower than those of the cutters. The box is actuated by a rod 16 from an eccentric 21 on a driving-shaft 17, the stroke of the eccentric being greater than the spacing of the cutters 11. Longitudinal flanges 15 on the edges of the box work in grooved guides formed by plates 14 bolted to the frame 4. The grain is discharged from the hopper 2 on either side of the partition 10, through openings controlled by adjustable gates 20. The grains pass partly through the perforations in the plate 8 and rest on the transverse members 13 until they come under the action of the cutters 11. By adjusting the distance of the members 13 from the plate 8, as by means of packing-material or springs acting between the frame 4 and the members 13, the thickness of the cut grains can be varied.
