Abstract
An appliance for use in papering a ceiling employs a handle (6) with which a user can raise the appliance up to the ceiling. A head piece (5) at the top of the handle (6) rotatably supports a roller (9) which presses a strip of paper against a ceiling. The strip of paper is wound around a number of cross pieces (3) of an open framework (1) and the framework (1) is held in a position substantially perpendicular to the handle (6) with the aid of a support (8) locked in position with a catch (7) on the handle. <IMAGE>
Description
AN APPLIANCE FOR FACILITATING THE PAPERING OF CEILINGS
The present invention relates to an appliance for facilitating the papering of ceilings.
The task of papering a ceiling presents a number of difficulties particularly to an inexperienced decorator.
For example, ideally no part of the paper should be allowed to hang vertically from the ceiling in an unsupported condition otherwise the paper will peel off the ceiling under the action of its own weight. Any paper not actually placed in position on the ceiling must also be supported in such a way that the paper can be offered up to the ceiling in an expeditious manner. Once a strip of paper has been coated with paste, or wetted in the case of pre-pasted paper, the damp paper will tear easily which makes the handling of the paper difficult.
An amateur home decorator would probably not generally have the skills to overcome these difficulties and there is thus a need for an appliance to assist the decorator in applying paper to a ceiling.
According to the present invention there is provided an appliance for facilitating the papering of ceilings; said appliance comprising an open framework composed of a pair of side rails separated by a number of spaced-apart cross members over which a strip of paper can be entrained in serpentine fashion, a handle for enabling a user to raise the framework up to a ceiling to be papered and a roller or the like for urging the pasted paper against the ceiling. Preferably, the roller is rotatably mounted in a position at right angles to the handle. The cross members of the framework may comprise at least three such members. It is preferable to have the framework pivotably connected so that it can be mounted in a working position extending generally at right angles to the handle or lowered into a stowed position against the handle.In order to hold the framework in its working position at right angles to the handle a support which takes a diagonal position between the framework and the handle can be provided, The support can be pivotably connected to the framework or to the handle and a latch or catch can be provided to detachably hold the support in position.
The invention will be understood more readily and various other aspects and features of the invention, may become apparent from consideration of the following description.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an appliance constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the appliance;
Figure 3 is a side view of the appliance showing a length of wallpaper about to be applied to a ceiling;
Figure 4 is an end view of the appliance with the frame in a collapsed position; and
Figure 5 is a representation of part of the handle showing a modified arrangement for locking the support.
As shown in the accompanying drawings an appliance constructed in accordance with the invention is composed of an open framework l composed of side rails 2 interconnected by a number of cross members 3 spaced apart along the rails 2. In the specific example there are six cross members 3 but this number can be varied.
A handle 6 with which the user of the appliance may raise the appliance up to a ceiling to be coated with wallpaper is attached to a head piece 5. The head piece 5 has a body portion 5" affixed to the handle 6 at right angles thereto and a pair of end walls 5". A roller 9 is rotatably supported by the end walls 5".
The rails 2 of the framework 1 are pivotably connected with pivot joints 18 to the end walls 5" of the head piece 5. Spaced below the head piece 5 and on the handle 6 there is a catch 7 pivotably mounted to the handle 6. A U-shaped support 8 is pivotably linked with pivot joints 19 to the rails 2 of the framework 1 at or near the ends remote from the head piece 5.
The framework 1 can be held at right angles to the handle 6 with the support 8 retained by the catch 7 as shown in Figure 1. With the support 8 released from the catch 7 the framework 1 with the support 8 can both be pivoted about the joints 18 against the handle 6.
The components making up the appliance can be made from wood, plastic or light metal. The roller 9 can be covered preferably with a soft foam rubber.
Figure 3 shows the appliance in its position ready for use with paper P partly entrained around the roller 9 and the cross members 3 in serpentine fashion. With the paper P prepared by pasting, or by soaking in the case of a pre-pasted paper, a single person can raise the appliance up to the ceiling with the pasted paper side confronting the ceiling. The person can then walk slowly across the room applying the paper to the ceiling in the direction of arrow T in Figure 3. As the user progresses across the ceiling the roller 9 presses the paper against the ceiling and the paper P moves around the cross members 3 to unwind therefrom. After rolling the appliance for a short distance the user can check if the paper P is being applied to the ceiling correctly.
If the paper is orientated off course the operator can correct this by gentle sideways pressure on the handle 6 so as to bring the pasted paper back into line. When the operator gets to the other side of the room the open end of the framework 1 will reach the opposite wall.
When this happens the catch 7 can be released to allow the framework 1 to collapse to a position against the handle 6 under the action of its own weight and the remaining portion of paper P can then be gently rolled into place. With the catch 7 released and the framework 1 stowed against the handle 6 as shown in Figure 4 the appliance adopts a compact collapsed state for ease of transport or storage.
Other mechanisms can be adopted to hold the framework 1 and the handle 6 at right angles to one another. For example, rods or levers can be pivoted to the side rails 2 and individually locked to the handle with one or more catches. Figure 5 shows an arraRgement with a tube 4 on the handle. The tube 4 can slide on the handle 6 and is retained by a pin 20 in a groove 21. A projection 22 on the tube 4 extends towards the framework l and the support 8 is engaged on the projection 22 when the appliance is in the working position as shown. To release the support 8, the tube 4 is raised to release the pin 20 from the groove 21 and the tube 4 can then be partly rotated to bring the projection 22 out of engagement with the support 8.
