Abstract
Viscose, which is to be converted into artificial horn or ivory by coagulation in moulds is treated to facilitate the washing out of alkalies and alkaline sulphides. The treatment consists in adding to the uncoagulated viscose a compound of an alkaline earth or heavy metal which reacts with the alkali, &c., to produce a soluble salt. Suitable reagents are aluminium, hydroxide, zinc oxide and calcium acetate. The soluble salt which is formed is either washed out or is treated with a second compound which precipitates the first metal and forms a second salt which can be washed out, e.g. treatment with aluminium hydroxide may be followed by washing with calcium chloride solution. The main process may be preceded by treatment with an oxide or hydroxide, e.g. iron oxide, which reacts with the sulphides to form an insoluble precipitate. The reactions may be regulated by the use of reduced temperature or pressure.
