Abstract
A stand for an elongate body having a convex base, such as gas cylinders used to contain oxygen or medical gases, and pressurised gas fire extinguishers, relies on the vertical height of a tubular holder being sufficient to hold the body stably, with at least part (3) of the holder being resiliently deformable to permit the body (6) to be placed in the holder or removed therefrom without the need to lift the body vertically to the full height of the holder. <IMAGE>
Description
STAND FOR AN ELONGATE BODY
This invention relates to a stand for an elongate body having a convex base. Examples of such bodies are gas cylinders such as are used to contain oxygen or medical gases, and pressurised gas fire extinguishers.
Typically, gas cylinders and the like are heavy bodies which are difficult to lift, and require stands which have a base portion to receive and restrain the convex bases of the bodies and have a collar or the like spaced vertically from the base portion and arranged to be securable to the upper part of the body. This arrangement is generally satisfactory, but the securing or removal of the body on the stand can be time consuming, and this is undesirable where the body is a fire extinguisher, for example.
The present invention seeks to overcome this disadvantage by providing a stand which requires no upper collar or the like, but relies on the vertical height of a tubular holder being sufficient to hold the body stably, with at least part of the holder being resiliently deformable to permit the body to be engaged in the holder or removed therefrom without the need to lift the body vertically to the full height of the holder.
Preferably, the holder is an open tubular member, which is suitably circular in cross-section (although other cross-sectional shapes may be used), and which is provided with stabilising means for holding the holder generally upright, at least the upper portion of the holder being resiliently deformable. The length and deformability of the holder may be selected such that the body is held generally upright therein, but is removable therefrom or introducible therein without being lifted to the full height of the holder.
The stabilising means may comprise means for anchoring the holder to the ground, such as bolts or screws, or anchors securable in concrete, for example. Alternatively, the stabilising means may comprise a base such as a metal plate whose area and/or mass prevent the holder from tipping over too readily.
The whole length of the holder may be deformable, or only a portion thereof, and the degree of deformability may vary with length. Those parts of the holder which are resiliently deformable may be formed of rubber or a plastics material, and the deformability may be selectively enhanced by making the material discontinuous around its circumference, for example by making the upper part of the holder toothed, crenellated or spiked.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a stand for an elongate body having a convex base, comprising a generally upright tubular holder for receiving and supporting the body, and means for securing the holder to the ground.
A stand in accordance with this aspect of the invention is particularly suitable for use with fire extinguishers, whose positions need to be fixed to ensure that they are available at the locations specified by the fire prevention or safety authorities, for example. Thus, a further aspect of the invention provides a fire extinguisher having a convex base, and a stand therefor, the stand comprising a generally upright tubular holder for receiving and supporting the extinguisher, and means for securing the holder to the ground.
Certain types of fire extinguisher are presently adapted to provide a stable base upon which the extinguisher may stand unsupported. Typically, this is achieved by providing a sleeve portion around the convex base of the main body of the extinguisher. According to a still further aspect of the invention, a device for adapting a cylinder or the like presenting a planar base comprises a generally convex member and attachment means for attaching the device to the base of the cylinder. In this context, "planar" includes a cylindrical or other rim.
Preferably, the attachment means comprises a permanent fastening, for example employing a padlock or the like, to prevent unauthorised removal of the device from the cylinder.
Reference is made to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cylinder stand according to one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic side elevation of the stand supporting a cylinder;
Figure 3 is a view corresponding to that of Figure 2, showing the method of removal or insertion of the cylinder;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an adaptor device in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a fire extinguisher with the adaptor device of Figure 4 fitted thereto.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 3, the stand comprises a tubular member 1 having a rigid lower portion 2 and a resiliently deformable upper portion 3 whose deformability is enhanced by the formation therein of elongate V-shaped cut-outs 4 leaving generally-V-shaped teeth 5 therebetween.
The lower end of the tubular member 1 is closed or simply bridged by an end plate (not shown) by which, with the provision of suitable apertures therein, it may be bolted or screwed to a flat horizontal surface, such as a floor of a building.
As may be seen from Figure 2, the overall height of the stand, and the length and resilience of the deformable portion 3, are such that it can support a gas cylinder 6 or the like standing therein. However, when the cylinder 6 is to be removed, the deformable upper portion 3 of the stand permits the cylinder to be withdrawn from the stand by a partly lateral movement such that it is not necessary to lift the cylinder clear of the stand vertically, as may be seen from Figure 3.
The device illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 is intended for use in adapting, for example, fire extinguishers which have been provided with a stabilising base to permit them to stand upright without support to a form which can only be used with a stand, for example of the type illustrated in Figures 1 to 3. This is desirable, for example, in circumstances where cylinders such as fire extinguishers are subject to being moved from their appointed place where they are readily available for use, to positions where they are not readily accessible. Often, for example, fire extinguishers may be used to hold open doors, even fire doors.
The device comprises a hemispherical base portion 10 with an attachment collar 11 which expands to permit location of the collar over the base 12 of a fire extinguisher 13 for example, and has securing means 14 which clamp the collar 11 on to the base 12. The securing means may include a padlock or other means to prevent unauthorised removal of the device. The device may be provided with a handle or a slot or aperture serving the same function.
