Description

METHOD OF MANUFACTURING A LINE GUIDE FOR USE ON A FISHING ROD This invention relates to a method of manufacturing a line guide for use on a fishing rod, and more particularly to an improvement in a device for connecting a line receiving annular element to a frame secured to a fishing rod.
A known line guide of the type noted above is disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication Kokai No. 56169533, for example. To manufacture this guide, a thermoplastic annular resin is placed between the frame and annular element. The resin is heated and compressed by dies, thereby filling a space between the frame and annular element. Consequently, the guide has the frame, resin and annular element integrated together.
According to this prior manufacturing method, the frame, resin and annular element are integrated after the compression by the dies, whereby no chattering occurs during use. The guide thereby manufactured has a further advantage that the resin acts as a buffer to protect the annular element when tension of the fishing line increases within a short time to impart a shock on the annular element.
However, the conventional annular element is often formed of a material, such as silicon carbide ceramic, which has excellent wear resistance but- is vulnerable to shocks. Where a resin is molded by moving dies as in the above-noted prior art, an annular element having a large outer contour due to manufacturing error may be damaged under the pressure of the dies. If the resin is used in an insufficient amount, the space between the frame and annular element is not filled by the resin despite the compression by the dies. This will results in chattering. Thus, there is room for improvement.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved method of manufacturing a line guide having a frame and an annular element rigidly connected by means of a resin, in which the annular element is protected from damage even if the annular element is formed of a damage-prone material. and which retains the advantage of forming a resin layer between the frame and annular element.
The above object is fulfilled, according to the present invention, by a method of manufacturing a line guide comprising the steps of maintaining, in a predetermined relative position, a frame to be supported by the fishing rod, and an annular element for receiving a fishing line, arranging forming dies over the frame and the annular element, and introducing a resin into the dies to form a resin layer between the frame and the annular element.
The present invention has the following functions and effects.
The above features may be arranged as shown in Figs. 1 through 4. At a time of manufacturing a line guide, a resin is injected into dies 5 in which a frame 2 and an annular element 3 are maintained in a predetermined relative position. The resin fills small gaps between the frame 2 and annular element 3, and forms a resin layer 4 joining the frame 2 and annular element 3. According to this method, even if the resin is injected under a great pressure, this pressure does not concentrate on any particular location whereby the annular element 3 is free from damage.
In this invention, a resin is introduced from outside the dies 5. and the resulting resin layer 4 between the frame 2 and annular element 3 is neither too large nor too small in quantity. Further. since the dies 5 are not actuated during formation of the resin layer 4, the frame 2 and annular element 3, even if lacking in manufacturing precision, are not damaged by pressures applied to certain locations thereof.
Thus, the present invention provides an improved method of manufacturing a line guide having a frame and an annular element rigidly connected by means of a resin, in which the annular element is protected from damage even if the annular element is formed of a damage-prone material, and which retains the advantage of forming a resin layer between the frame and annular element.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front view of a frame and an annular element prior to formation of a resin layer.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of dies in a guide manufacturing operation, Fig. 3 is a front view of a guide, Fig. 4 is a side view in vertical section of the guide, and Fig. 5 is a side view in vertical section of a modified guide.
An embodiment of the present invention will particularly be described with reference to the drawings.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a line guide is mounted on a fishing rod 1. The guide includes a frame 2 having a tubular support portion 2A secured to the rod 1, and an annular element 3 formed of ceramic for receiving a fishing line. A resin layer 4 is formed between the frame 2 and annular element 3.
The guide is manufactured. using the frame 2 and annular element 3 manufactured beforehand. and forming the resin layer 4 between the frame 2 and annular element 3 by the following method.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the frame 2 and annular element 3 are placed in split dies 5. In this position, the annular element 3 is in contact with three projections 2C formed on an inner periphery of the frame 2 defining an opening 2B.
With the frame 2 and annular element 3 placed in the dies 5 as illustrated. annular spaces S are formed between front and rear surfaces of the annular element 3 and front and rear surfaces of the frame 2.
Next, a resin is introduced into the spaces S in the dies 5 by an injector. As a result, the resin layer 4 is formed between the frame 2 and annular element 3 to complete the guide.
The resin used for forming the resin layer 4 is a nylon resin. As shown in Fig. 4, the resin layer 4 surrounds the front and rear surfaces of the annular element 3 to hold the annular element 3 against fore and aft movement. and adheres closely to the front and rear surfaces of the annular element 3 and frame 2 to provide a rigid connection therebetween. The resin layer 4 also acts as a buffer between the frame 2 and annular element 3.
The frame 2 is formed of a metal, and a soft resin 6 is formed around an inner peripheral surface of the tubular support portion 2A of the frame 2 to promote tight contact with the fishing rod 1.
The foregoing embodiment may be modified as shown in Fig, 5. As seen, the guide includes an annular element 3 having a U-shaped section with a groove 3A formed peripherally thereof. The projections 2C of the frame 2 are fitted in the groove 3A to enhance the positioning feature. The construction of the frame 2 and the material of the annular element 3 may also be "arid in many ways.
The present invention is applicable to a fixed guide as well as a movable guide.
