Description

COMPOSITION The invention relates to a composition, suitable for use as micro-emulsion cleaner in seawater and to a micro-emulsion cleaner therefrom prepared. Micro-emulsions are optically clear systems which particle size lies below the wave-length of light (380 to 780 nm). They comprise at least 4 components: oily substance, water, emulgator and emulsifying aid (Ullmans Encyklopadie der technischen Chemie, 4th Edition, Volume 10, 1975, page 455).
Generally micro-emulsions are not stable in seawater and they lose their activity. Therefore, micro-emulsions are generally not acceptable for cleaning oil and gas platforms at sea. It has been found that where micro-emulsions were completely suitable to be used in tapwater they failed totally in seawater or synthetic seawater.
Applicant has now found a formulation which does not have this drawback.
The invention relates to a composition, suitable for use as micro-emulsion cleaner in seawater, comprising: a) a C12 to C18 alpha-olefin sulphonate, b) a Cg to C18 alcohol, ethoxylated with from 1 to 9 oxyethyiene units per mol of alcohol, c) an aromatic hydrocarbon, and d) water, the weight ratio of b/a being in the range of from 1.5:1 to 8:1.
The inventive composition is extraordinary stable in seawater, especially in the temperature range of from 0 OC to 30 "C.
Moreover the inventive composition, used as emulsion cleaner has the capability of cleaning surfaces which are polluted with o 1 as well as water-soluble compounds.
The composition preferably may contain aromatic hydrocarbons which have an auto-ignition temperature in the range of from 5C C to 550 'C and a flash point above 45 "C; examples are Shellsol A, Shellsol AB and Shellsol R, having an auto-ignition temperature of 505 "C, 508 "C and 486 "C respectively (Shellsol is a trade mark).
The high auto-ignition temperature makes the aromatic compounds even more suitable for being used on hot surfaces present on oil platforms.
The invention specifically relates to a composition, suitable for use as micro-emulsion cleaner in seawater, comprising: a) a C12 to C18 alpha-olefin sulphonate, b) a Cg to C18 alcohol, ethoxylated with from 1 to 9 oxyethylene units per mol of alcohol, c) an aromatic hydrocarbon having an auto-ignition temperature in the range of from 450 "C to 550 "C and a flash point above 45 "C, and d) water, the weight ratio of b/a being in the range of from 1.5:1 to 8:1.
As already indicated hereinbefore the weight ratio of the alpha-olefin sulphonate to the ethoxylated alcohol is important in that outside the indicated range no stable micro-emulsions can be prepared from the compositions.
Instead of in seawater the micro-emulsion also works in synthetic seawater, containing from about 3 to 10 per cent by weight of sodium chloride.
The micro-emulsion cleaner is formed by mixing the inventive composition with the seawater in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:25.
A preferred composition according to the invention, comprises.
5.0-9.4 per cent by weight of compound a), 14.1-20 per cent by weight of compound b), 18 -22 per cent by weight of water, and the balance being the aromatic compound.
Preferred alpha-olefin sulphonates comprise the sodium, potassium or ammonium sulphonates. The alpha-olefin sulphonates preferably have mainly C14 and C16 alkyl groups.
The component b) is a C9 to C18 alcohol, preferably a Cg to C11 alcohol, which is ethoxylated. Acyclic aliphatic mono-dric alcohols (alkanols) are a preferred class, particularly primary alkanols. The alkanols may be of branched or straight chain structure, although preference exists for alkanols with more than 50 per cent of the molecules of linear structure. Ethoxylation is preferably carried out so that an average of from 2 to 6 oxyethylene units per mol of alcohol is present.
The compositions according to the invention may additionally comprise a small amount of a salt, e.g. sodium chloride.
Examples 1-3 Compositions were prepared with the following weight amounts of DOBANOL (DOBANOL is a trade mark), sulphonate, water and Shellsol AB. In one formulation NaCl was added.
I II III DOBANOL 91-2.5 8.4 8.2 9.4 DOBANOL 91-6 8.4 8.2 9.4 C14-Cl6 alpha-olefin sulphonate (Na salt) 7.2 7.1 6.2 water 20.0 19.6 20.0 Shellsol AB fro.0 54.9 55.0 NaCl - 2.0 DOBANOL 91-2.5 is a mixture of C9 11 alcohols, which has been ethoxylated with an average of 2.5 mols ethylene oxide on one mol alcohol.
DOBANOL 91-ó is a mixture of Cog 11 alcohols, which has been ethoxylated with an average of 6 mols ethylene oxide on one mol alcohol.
Blends I and III were emulsions, which in synthetic seawater gave micro-emulsions.
Blend II was a micro-emulsion, which in synthetic seawater gave a micro-emulsion.
C14-C16 alpha-olefin sulphonate (Na salt) is calculated as 100 per cent active material.
Example 4 A composition was prepared with the following weight amounts of DOBANOL, sulphonate, water and Shellsol AB: DOBANOL 91-2.5 10.5 g DOBANOL 91-6 10.5 g C14-Cl6 alpha-olefin sulphonate (Na salt) 9 g water 16.9 g Shellsol AB 70.0 g The emulsion stability of the composition was tested in Synthetic Sea Water (SSW) at various concentrations: Concentration in SSW Emulsion stability * volume after 1, 4, 2 hours 5 micro-emulsion 10 micro-emulsion 20 micro-emulsion 30 micro-emulsion 40 micro-emulsion 50 micro-emulsion calculated as 100 per cent active material.
Example 5 The same composition as in example 4 was used in emulsion stability tests, as a 50% volume blend in water of varying salinities.
The salinity scan was from 0 to 1008 synthetic sea water.

Example A (comparative) A composition was prepared comprising 18.7 g of DOBANOL (being a mixture of DOBANOL 91-2.5 and DOBANOL 91-6 in a weight ratio of 50:50); 5.6 g of a C14-C16 alpha-olefin sulphonate (Na salt) (active matter 37.2 per cent by weight) and 62.5 g of Shellsol AB.
A 50% volume blend in synthetic seawater was made and tested for micro-emulsion stability. It appeared that the emulsion showed gel formation and liquid crystals.
