Abstract

A ceiling structure for a building which has joists 15, 15a comprises elongate elements 30 extending beneath appropriate joists and along and across the joists. Plaster boards or other ceiling members 17 have edges supported in the elements 30 which may be U or I section and be nailed to the joists. Members 17 may also be nailed in position. <IMAGE>

Description

D > PROVEMENTS IN OR REIhTING TO BUILDSGS This invention relates to buildings, and in particular to ceilings.
According to this invention a ceiling structure comprises a plurality of spaced joists, elongate elements below the joists and secured thereto, and boards or other ceiling members supported on the elongate elements.
The elongate elements may comprise U-section members. The elongate elements may comprise Isection elements.
The boards or other ceiling members may be secured to the elongate elements.
The edges of the boards or other ceiling members may be received in the elongate members.
The invention provides a method of forming a ceiling structure comprising- securing elongate elements below and to a plurality of joists, and supporting boards or other ceiling members on the elongate elements.
The elements may extend along and across the joists.
The invention includes a ceiling structure formed as above.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a house; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a floor structure; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a floor structure; Fig. 4 is a section of floor structure; Fig. 5 is a section of floor structure illustrating an embodiment; Fig. 6 is a plan view of an embodiment; Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing part of floor structure; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of a modification.
A house 20 is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 as having opposed walls 10, 11; ceiling/floor structure 12, 13 and roof 14.
The ceiling/floor structure 12, 13 has wood joists 15 extending parallel to the walls 10, 11 and supported at their ends on two further walls (only one shown at 16). Panels for example of plaster board 17 are secured beneath the joists 15 and may receive a subsequent scrim covering of plaster. A suitable flooring of wood (not shovm) is placed on top of the joists.
To secure the boards 17 in place, a number of lengths 18 of wood are secured by nails between adjacent joists 15 (Figs 2, 4) and the boards 17 are nailed to the joists 15 and lengths 18 as appropriate as shown at 19. Considerable work is involved in installing all the lengths 18 and difficulties arise when (see Fig. 3) the arrangements of joists and lengths 18 is not truly orthogonal; for example it may be difficult to ascertain the position of the joists and lengths from below the board 17.
In the present case, the lengths 18 are omitted and appropriate edges of the boards 17 are supported in elements 30 which are secured to the joists 15, see for example Pig. 5.
The elements 30 may, for example, be lengths of aluminium section. For example, in Pig. 7 an Isection element 30 is used to support adjacent edges 31 of the two boards 17. The nails 19 extend through the arms 32 of the section 30 and the boards 17. At a joist 15a Pig. 5 adjacent a wall 10 a Usection element 30 is used, with the upper horizontal arm 32 longer than the lower arm 33; nails 19 extend through the arm 32 into the joist 15a and secure the element 30 to the joist; the edge portion of the board 17 is then inserted into the element 30 and rests on the arm 33. The opposite edge is then inserted into the respective element 30 and nailed to the appropriate joist.
A series of nails 19 are located at spaced intervals along the elements 30. The elements 30 extend along and across the joists.
In the case (Pig. 6) where the joists are not quite at the correct angle, the elements 30 are positioned to be along the joists and the board 17 trimmed to size as at 40 before being placed in adjacent element 30b.
In the modification of Pig. 8, the element 30 has a central web 50 with upper and lower spaced lateral projections 51 rather than continuous arms 32. Other shapes are possible for elements 30.
Not all the edges of the boards 17 in some cases are supported by elements 30.
In some cases one or more board edges may be nailed direct to a joist.
Other materials are possible for the elements 30.
The elements 30, 30b may be formed in two or more parts secured together.
