Abstract
In mounting plasterboard panels, a first panel 36 (left hand) is nailed to ceiling joists, then a generally I - section support strip 37 is fitted to the edge of the panel as shown, a second panel 36 (right hand) then being fitted as shown into support strip 37, which thus replaces the conventional nogging between the joists.
Description
2341400 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO METHODS OF MOUNTING PLASTERBOARD
PANELS.
This invention relates to methods ofrnounting plasterboard panels.
According to the invention, a method of mounting plasterboard panels to fbrm a ceiling comprises the steps of fixing one elongate panel, to the undersides of parallel joists with the panel extending transverse to thejoists and the side edges of the panel unsupportod, providing an elongate bridging member along one side of the erected panel, so that the panel supports the blid member in place, locating a further panel in place paMlel with the first panel. and with a side edge of the located m and supported by the bridging rnernber,,,and fixing.the Further panel to thejoists so that the bridging ntern figs the gap between.adjacent panels and provides support between the adjacent side edges of the panels, the method being characterised in that the bridging member used comprises a central upright web to fie between 0 edges of two panela, the web having out-turned flanges along its lower edge on which a pair of sheets rest, and out-turned flanges along its upper edge extending on both sides of the web to overlie and co the upper faces of the sheets.
llic following is a description of a specific embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the to the accompanying dra in wifich;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a ceiling of a building in the course of construction in WIfich plasterboard panels are red to the undersides ofjoists; Figure 2 is a sectional view. through a joint between a pair of plasterboard panels interconnected by a bridging member, Fig 3 is a perspective view of part of the joint of Figure 2 showing the bridging member in greater details; Figure 4 is a top plan view of the bridging member-, Figure 5 is a side plan view of the bridging member, and Figure 6 is a under plan view of the bridging member, Figure 1 of the drawings accompanying this specification shows a cavity wall indicated generally at 30, comprising an outer brick skin 31 and an inner breeze block skin 32 seperated by a layer of insulation 33. Spaced parallel horizontally extending floor joists 35 are supported at their ends in the inner in 32 of the wall and plasterboard panels 36 are secured to the undersides of the joins.
An elongate bridging member 3 7 is located between adjacerpanels 36 to support the edges of the panels in place of the conventional wnogging", that is wooden strips secured between adjacent joists.
Refbrence will now be made to Figures 3-6 of the - aanying drawings, which show the bridging m of the pmmit inon in detafl. The bridging member 37 comprises two L -section members that are fbrrned from a single piece of material, the uprights 38 and 39 of which are back -to-back to form a vertic:al web to locate between the adjacent edges of the plasterboard panels 36. The anns of each L section form out-turned flanges 40, 41 on which the uides of the plasterboard pawls rest. The edges of the 40,41 are fbnned with a sM shaped profile as indicated at 42 and 43 extending along the length of the flanges to in the risk of cracking the plasterboard 9 along the edges of the flanges.
The upper edges of the uprights 38 is formed with a flange 44 extending on either side of the web 38 to engage over the upper edges of the plasterboard panets.
The method of mounting the p1Werboard panels on the jol". is described as follows. As panels are erected on the joi sb starting from the wall, a length of bridging member is located on the panel with the fice edge of the panel engaging between the upper and lower flanges on one side of the bridging member. ne next panel to be created is then located in place under the joists with an edge of the panel engaging in the other side of the bridging mernber and is secured to the joists by nailing in the usual way.
Claims (4)
1. A method of mounting plasterboard panels to form a ceiling Comprises the steps of fbdng one elongate panel. to the undersides of Pa joists with the extending transverw to the joists and the sideedges of the unsTported, providing an elongate bridging member along one side edge of the erected so that the panel supports the bridging m in place locating a further in place parallel with the first panel and with a side edge of the panel located in, and supported by the bridging member, and fixing the further panel to thejoists so that the bridging member fills the gap between adJacent panels and provides support between the adjacent side edges of the panels, the method being characterised in that the bridging member used comprises a ral upright web to he between adjacent edgets of two panels, the web having out4 flanges along its lower edge on which a pair of sheets rest and out- flanges along its upper edge extending on both sides of the web to overlie and constrain the upper fitces of the sheets.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the edge of the lower flanges have a walloped profile extending along the length thereof
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the bridging member comprisw a pair of L- shaped cross -section eleme^ the uprights of which are back-to-back and are formed from a single piece of material to form the web of the bridging member and the arms of which extend outdly from the lower ends of the uprights to form said lower flanges of the bridging member, the uprights of the web being ffirmed with flanges 3 along its upper edge extending on either side of the web to provide the upper flanges of the bridging member.
4. A method as claimed in claim 1 claim 2 or claim 3 whereby the member can be constructed to accommodate all thicknemes of plasterboard panels including taper edge panels.
