Abstract

A multi-packaging unit comprises a laminated sheet 1 which consists of a card 2 and a plastics coating 3 lightly bonded to one surface of the card, the sheet being sub-divided into a plurality of separable patches 4 by supplementary lines of weakness 5 in the laminated sheet. Preformed enclosures 6 each having a peripheral wall 7 defining an open face are each so mounted on the plastics coating 3 of one of the patches 4 that the open face is closed by, and the peripheral wall is bonded to, the plastics coating to form a disposable package. The plastics coating 3 of each patch 4 has disposed inwardly of the peripheral 7 of the enclosure 6 bonded to the coating an area 9 bounded, and separated from the surrounding part 10 of the plastics coating, by a line of weakness 11 extending through the plastics coating. <IMAGE>

Description

AN IMPROVED MULTI-PACKAGING UNIT Small articles or components of the kind used in the engineering, do-it-yourself, pharmaceutical and haberdashery fields are marketed in disposable packages of the kind comprising a preformed enclosure having an open face and so mounted on one surface of a sheet of fracturable material that the open face is closed by and the peripheral wall of the enclosure is bonded to said surface of the sheet, the contents of the package having been introduced into the enclosure before the peripheral wall of the enclosure is bonded to the sheet. Usually, access to the contents of a disposable package of this kind is achieved either by separating the sheet and the enclosure or by forming, through the opposite surface of that part of the sheet bounded by the peripheral wall of the enclosure, a hole opening into the enclosure.A disposable package of the aforesaid kind will, for convenience, hereinafter be referred to as "of the kind described".
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved multi-packaging unit consisting of a plurality of disposable packages of the kind described, which multi-packaging unit is of such a construction that a disposable package is readily separable therefrom and access to the contents of a disposable package of the unit can be readily attained.
According to the invention, the improved multipackaging unit comprises a laminated sheet which consists of an upper layer overlying and lightly bonded to a lower layer and which is sub-divided into a plurality of separable patches by supplementary continuous or discontinuous lines of weakness in at least the upper layer of the laminated sheet, and a plurality of preformed enclosures each having a peripheral wall and an open face and each so mounted on the upper layer of one of said patches of the laminated sheet that the open face is closed by, and the peripheral wall is bonded to, the upper layer of said patch to form a disposable package, the upper layer of each patch having disposed inwardly of the peripheral wall of the enclosure bonded thereto an area bounded, and separated from the surrounding part of the upper layer of said patch, by a continuous or discontinuous line of weakness extending through said upper layer, whereby a disposable package can be separated from the multi-packaging unit along said supplementary lines of weakness and/or the preformed enclosure of said disposable package can be separated from its underlying patch to provide access to the contents of the package by peeling said surrounding part of the upper layer of said patch, with the peripheral wall of said enclosure bonded thereto, from said lower layer of said patch so that said surrounding part of the upper layer will separate along said line of weakness from the area of the upper layer disposed inwardly of the peripheral wall of the enclosure.
Preferably, the supplementary lines of weakness of the improved multi-packaging unit are of such a form and depth that a disposable package can be readily detached from the unit without providing access to the contents of the package. For example, each supplementary line of weakness may be a line of perforations through the laminated sheet.
The preformed enclosure of each disposable package preferably is a preformed body of transparent plastics material and, preferably also, the free edge of the peripheral wall of the preformed enclosure of each disposable package has an outwardly extending flange which is bonded to the surrounding part of the upper layer of its underlying patch. The preformed enclosure of each disposable package may be of any convenient shape or configuration.
To facilitate initial peeling of said surrounding part of the upper layer of the patch of each disposable package from the lower layer thereof, preferably the patch of each disposable package has a corner outwardly of the peripheral wall of its preformed enclosure across which is provided a line of weakness extending through the upper layer or the lower layer of the patch.
Preferably, the lower layer of the laminated sheet of the improved multi-packaging unit is made of card or relatively thick paper and the upper layer of the laminated sheet overlying and lightly bonded to the lower layer is a coating of plastics material.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred multipackaging unit with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmental plan view of the preferred multi-packaging unit, for clarity the contents of each disposable package being omitted, and Figure 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view of the preferred multi-packaging unit taken on the line II II in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the preferred multipackaging unit comprises a laminated sheet 1 which consists of a lower layer 2 of card and, lightly bonded to one surface of the card, an upper layer 3 constituted by a coating of plastics material. The laminated sheet 1 is sub-divided into a plurality of separable patches 4 by intersecting supplementary continuous lines of weakness 5 which extend through the plastics coating 3 and partly through the underlying card 2. Each separable patch 4 carries a preformed enclosure 6 of transparent plastics material having a peripheral wall 7 which defines an open face and whose free edge has an outwardly extending flange 8 bonded to the plastics coating 3 of the patch to close the open face and form a disposable package. Each disposable package will normally contain a small article or component (not shown) e.g. a sealing pot for a mineral insulated electric cable. The plastics coating 3 of each separable patch 4 has disposed inwardly of the peripheral wall 7 of the enclosure 5 bonded to the coating an area 9 bounded, and separated from the surrounding part 10 of the plastics coating, by a peripherally continuous line of weakness 11 extending through the plastics coating but not into the underlying card.
A disposable package can be separated from the multi-packaging unit along the supplementary lines of weakness 5 without providing access to the contents of the package.
Access to the contents of a disposable package can be readily attained before or after the package has been separated from the multi-packaging unit by peeling the surrounding part 10 of the plastics coating 3 of the patch of the package, with the flange 8 of the peripheral wall 7 of the preformed enclosure 6 bonded thereto, from the underlying card 2 of the patch so that the surrounding part of the plastics coating will separate along the peripherally continuous line of weakness 11 through the plastics coating from the area 9 of the plastics coating disposed inwardly of the peripheral wall of the enclosure.
