Abstract

1414809 Package closures; opening containers NYFFELER CORTI AG 15 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 57922/72 Headings B8C and B8D A heat sealable cover for a container comprises a plastics, paper, or aluminium foil layer 1 having a thickness in the range of 30 to 40 microns and at least one opening 3 therein, and a straw or finger-pierceable plastics, paper, or aluminium foil layer 5 having a thickness in the range 10 to 20 microns bonded by an adhesive 4 over the opening. As shown, the covers are stamped out of composite strip formed by applying the layer 5 to the underside of a strip of the foil of layer 1, which has been provided with openings 3 and a printing varnish layer 2, the layer 5 being provided with a heat sealable adhesive layer 6 if the pierceable layer itself is not heat sealable. Alternatively, the pierceable layer may be applied after cover lengths have been cut from the strip, may extend over only that portion of the cover adjacent the opening, and may be disposed on the over surface of the cover. The opening may be centrally-located and circular or peripherallylocated and semi-circular, piercing of the covering foil layer being effected by a straw or finger tip when access to the contents of a container to which the cover is applied is required. The cover may be flanged to the container in addition to heat sealing.
