Abstract

225,834. Eckart, C. F. Dec. 3, 1923, [Convention date]. Compound paper. -Strips or sheets of flexible material used for mulching purposes for enhancing the growth of plants may be of dark coloured paper, felt', or fabric, and may contain asphaltic material, or may be treated with asphalt, &c. to render them more resistant to water and more capable of absorbing solar heat. They are preferably provided throughout their areas with small drainage openings guarded by upwardly-closing flaps. The openings 2 in the strips 1 may be made by tearing the material so as to form flaps of V or other shape as shown in Fig. 2, and may be arranged in staggered relation in rows. Fig. 7 shows a drainage opening 2 made by puncturing the material and thus forming several flaps. In use the flaps are on the lower side so as to allow of the passage downwards of water but not the growth of weeds. The marginal edges of the flaps extend beyond the corresponding edges of the openings and prevent upward movement. Larger openings may be provided for plants to grow in. Flexible material for the purpose may consist of an inner layer 4 Fig. 8, of asphalt or asphalt-impregnated fibres and outer layers of fibres that are not impregnated. One of the outer layers may be omitted.
