Abstract

Operating and controlling doors by springs and checks. -In a check for doors, windows, and other hinged members and of the kind in which a pivoted piston has a lost-motion connection with a piston-rod controlling the part therein, an additional port is provided with means for restricting the passage of check fluid therethrough near the end movement of the stroke of the piston. The check cylinder 23 may be arranged as the diagonal of a U-shaped linkwork, as shown in Fig. 1. In a check cylinder as shown in Fig. 2, the piston 30 is secured to the piston-rod 29 by a pin 34 engaging a slot 33 in a reduced extension 32 of the piston-rod. The stepped part 35 on the piston-rod is movable into and out of engagement with the axial duct 31 and serves as a one-way valve through which the check fluid flows freely when the door is being opened. Tho other port 36 is engaged by a rod 37,and the rod is cylindrical at 37d and flattened at 37<c>, the part 37<a> being screw-threaded whereby the rod can be adjustably mounted in the upper part 27 of the cylinder. When the door is being opened, the valve-member 35 is lifted sufficiently from the piston to allow the checking fluid to pass freely through the port 31. Or the door closing under the action of the spring 22, the check fluid can pass only through the port 36. The flattened part 37<c> allows the door to close freely until the door is nearly closed, when the part 37<d> obstructs the port 36 and the door is checked. The threaded part 37<a> provides for the reverse position of the end 37<d> being varied with respect to the piston 30. As shown in Fig. 1, the end 24 of the cylinder is adjustably secured at 26 to the link 21, and this link is attached to the bracket 18 on the door and to the end of a link 19 mounted at 17 on the wall.
