Abstract

A pillow, cushion or duvet comprising an outer envelope (10) defining an interior divided into at least two compartments by a dividing sheet (11) each compartment containing a different filler. In an example one compartment is filled with a man-made material (13) such as polyester to provide support whilst the other compartment, intended to be positioned uppermost in use, is filled with natural feather (14) for maximum comfort. Thus, the product combines comfort and support. <IMAGE>

Description

A FILLED PRODUCT SUCH AS A PILLOW, CUSHION OR DUVET THIS INVENTION concerns a filled product such as, for example, a pillow, cushion or duvet. Such products are conventionally available with a filling of either a natural material such as feather or a man-made material such as polyester, or a mixture of both.
It is well known that man-made filling materials usually of a foamed plastics provide, in such a product, a certain resilient firmness or resistance to compression, whilst feather provides a softer feel with greater compressibility and less resilience.
It is usually a matter of personal preference when choosing a pillow, cushion or duvet, but an object of the present invention is to provide such a filled product in such a form that the combined advantages of firm support and comfort may be achieved.
According to the present invention there is provided a filled product such as, for example, a pillow, cushion or duvet, comprising an outer envelope defining an interior divided into at least two separate compartments, and at least two separate filling materials contained within said compartments, said filling materials having respectively different degrees of compressibility or resilience.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates, in cross section, a pillow made in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawing the pillow comprises an outer fabric envelope or tick 10 which may be woven from, for example, a blended fibre consisting of 75% polyester and 25% cotton.
The tick 10 includes a dividing sheet 11 which may be of a similar material and which is sewn along the edges together with the tick 10 by means of an overlocked seam 12.
The sheet 11 serves to divide the interior of the tick into two separate compartments one of which is filled with a manmade filling material 13 such as polyester, whilst the other is filled with, for example, curled duck feather 14.
Such a product is intended to be used with the man-made fibre filling 13 at the bottom to provide support, and the natural feather filling 14 at the top to provide user comfort.
The finished pillow will be of conventional dimensions, for example, 75cm x 50cm. The volume of each material comprising the fillings will be selected according to the required relative degrees of support and comfort.
It is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only. For example, the interior of the outer casing may be made into three or more compartments thus to provide zones of different compressibility or resilience. Thus, for example, the front upper region of a pillow may be firm to provide neck support.
In the process of manufacture, the product is initially provided as three sheets of tick fabric all sewn together along 3 sides of a rectangular product such as a pillow or cushion, and the filling is inserted separately into the two compartments before fourth sides of the three sheets are seamed together.
The dividing sheet 11 may be of a less durable and cheaper material than the two other sheets, or it may be of fine netting. For convenience, the compartment containing the curled feather may be provided with an opening flap to remove an inner bagged filling of natural feather, whereby the remainder of the product may be laundered separately.

Claims (10)

1. A filled product such as, for example, a pillow, cushion or duvet, comprising an outer envelope defining an interior divided into at least two separate compartments, and at least two different filling materials contained separately within said compartments.
2. A filled product according to Claim 1, wherein said filling materials having respectively different degrees of compressibility or resilience.
3. A filled product according to Claim 1 wherein said compartments are superimposed with the lower one containing a manmade fibre filling to provide support, and with the upper compartment containing a natural feather filling to provide comfort.
4. A filled product according to Claim 1, comprising three sheets of material placed in superimposed relationship and sewn together along all four sides of a rectangular product such as a pillow, the middle one of said sheet serving to divide the pillow into said two compartments one of which contains a man-made fibre filling material whilst the other contains a natural feather filling.
5. A filled product according to any preceding claim, including three or more divided compartments thus to provide several zones of various compressibility or resilience.
6. A filled product according to Claim 4, wherein the dividing sheet is of a different material from that of the outer envelope.
7. A filled product according to any preceding claim, wherein at least one of said compartments is provided with an opening flap to enable a separate inner filled bag to be removed such that different parts of the product may be laundered separately.
8. A filled product according to any preceding claim, wherein one of said filling materials is polyester and wherein the other of said filling materials is a natural material.
9. A filled product according to any preceding claim, comprising a pillow having a front upper zone separately containing a relatively firm material to provide a neck support.
10. A filled product such as, for example, a pillow, cushion or duvet, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
