Abstract
A panel for a roof construction has a frame 10 preferably of angle iron and cross members comprising wooden poles 12, the frame 10 being able to support roofing elements, preferably bundles 14 of thatching which are secured to the cross poles 12. The underview closely resembles conventional thatching. The panels nay be made in a factory and then transported to the site. The outside of the thatch may be treated with a fire retardant composition, and the inside with a fireproof varnish. <IMAGE>
Description
ROOF CONIRUCflON This invention relates to a roof construction and, in particular to a roof construction for thatch, shingles, tiles or other decorative roofs.
As far as the Applicant is aware, thatch roofs have always been constructed by forming a structure of purlins and rafters and then laying bundles of thatch on the structure and tying them down with string, wire or the like. In other words, the construction is always carried out in the open and is, therefore, affected by weather conditions.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate this disadvantage and, in addition, to provide units which can be easily assembled even by unskilled labour.
According to the invention a panel for a roof construction includes a frame with cross members adapted to support roofing material chosen from thatching, shingles, tiles and the like, the panel being adapted to be fixed to rafters and/or battens or other constructional members.
In a preferred form of the invention a frame is provided having cross members spaced apart sufficiently to support bundles of thatching and to receive loops of wire, cord or the like for securing the thatching bundles thereto.
The frame may be of angle iron or may be square or rectangular in section, and the cross members may be wooden poles so that the underview is very similar to conventional thatch. The frames may be of modular dimensions and may be bolted together to cover the whole roof area
Frames and cross members may be provided to suit shingles or tiles.
It will be appreciated that the panels may be fabricated in a factory and then transported to the site, thus avoiding the vicissitudes of the weather.
An embodiment of the invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric underview of a frame which is partly thatched according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an A-frame dwelling using roof panels according to the invention In Figure 1, a frame 10 of steel or timber has cross members in the form of poles 12, which are fixed to the frame in any conventional manner.
Bundles 14 of thatch are secured to the cross poles 12 by means of cords 18.
The frames 10 are modular in dimension and may simply be laid on purlins and rafters of the roof structure and secured thereto. It may be necessary to waterproof the joins between adjacent panels.
The outside surface of the thatch should be treated with a fire retardant composition and the inside may be treated with a fireproof varnish.
In Figure 2 an A-frame dwelling is illustrated which includes roof panels or frames 10 covered with thatch 14 as described above.
