Abstract

225,326. Thomas, T. Oct. 4, 1923. Protectors, construction of; protectors, securing.-In protectors of the type in which a carrier or plate is permanently secured to the boot and a wearing-piece or holder for a wearing-piece is secured to the carrier by flexible attachments without the aid of nails or screws, the carrier is provided with slots adjacent its periphery and the wearing part or holder has flexible metal tongues adapted to be bent and engaged in the slots of the carrier. For a heel, the carrier may comprise a plate 1, Fig. 1, provided with slots 1<a>. placed next - the heel and secured by a plate 2, Fig. 2, placed over the plate 1 and secured by nails. A wearing part for use with this carrier may comprise a moulded rubber member 12a, Fig. 6, secured by a skeleton metal frame 11 provided with flexible metal tongues 4b which are engaged in the slots 1<a>. A metal holder provided with flexible metal attaching tongues may have slots engaging metal tongues 17, Fig. 11, of protectors of stud, hobnail, or " Blakey " form. A revoluble heel-pad 13, Fig. 15, may be similarly attached to a holder. In a modification, the carrier 1, Fig. 8, may have an upwardly-flanged extension 5 slotted for engagement with the tongues 5a of the holder. The holder may comprise metal strips engaging channels in the wearing part, or a canvas or other backing vulcanized to the wearing part. A layer 3<a>, Fig. 8, of rubber, leather, or other material may be interposed between the holder and carrier.
