Abstract

There is disclosed an underwater profile detection system for monitoring the profile of an underwater target, such as a trench (11) in the seabed (10) and which comprises a set of underwater scanners (15) operable to direct acoustic signals towards the target (11) and to receive reflected signals from the target in order to monitor the profile thereof, and a remote electronic monitoring station (16) connectable via an umbilical (13) to the scanners (15) and operable to process signals received from the scanners and to derive therefrom a display on a screen (17) which is representative of the profile which is undergoing scanning. Each scanner (15) comprises a waterproof housing (18) divided into first and second compartments (19, 20), an acoustic scanning head (21) pivotally mounted on one end of the housing (18) and arranged to emit an acoustic profile detection signal towards the target (11) whose profile is to be monitored, to receive the signal reflected from the target, and to translate this into a signal which is representative of the profile of the target; an electronic processing unit mounted in the first compartment (19) and connected to the scanning head (21) so as to be able to receive the profile signal and to process the profile signal for onward transmission via the umbilical (13) to the remote electronic monitoring station (16); and a drive unit mounted in the second compartment (20) and coupled with the scanning head (21) so as to advance the head through predetermined angular increments at each of which profile detection signals are transmitted. The scanning head (21) comprises two separate substantially planar acoustic transducers (22) which are capable of issuing profile detection signals simultaneously, and which are adjustable together as a unit between different angular settings under the control of the drive unit, and which are enclosed by an acoustically transparent oil filled enclosure dome (23). <IMAGE>
