Abstract

A roller having blunt blades around the periphery is used to destroy bracken by bruising and crushing the stems. The root energy is then exhausted by trying to self heal and no more energy is available for spreading. <IMAGE>

Description

BRACKEN BRUISER.
This machine is of rigid construction enabling it to be used forward or reverse enabling the operation to be carried out in reverse up the steepest gradient and return down the same track so avoiding turning of the tractor sideways on the hill, a strong safety factor. Being mounted the machine is easy to transport. The blades are blunt edged and bruise the bracken stems every 6" approx. giving a nbleedingeffect. The bracken the uses up energy trying to recover, consequently has not sufficient strength to spread. After each annual treatment erradication improves up to three years to almost extinction.
No damage caused to other plant life. Three years treatment would cost approximately the same as spraying but would be environmently friendly. The machine can be constructed to various widths to suit tractor horse power.

Claims (1)

  1. Bracken Breaker In our opinion it is unique in principle. Other methods of bracken destruction, to our knowledge, employ cutting edge machines which do not work in the long term because the rhizomes simply re-sprout whereas our method is to bruise, not cut, the stems. The root energy is then exhausted by trying the self heal and no more energy is available for spreading.
    Construction of the machine As opposed to other machines with cutting edges we have a nil or very low maintenance cost. It also works forward or reverse, a good safety factor, by not having to turn on the hills can reverse down again to a suitable place giving a double crushing effect. Aerial spraying can pollute streams, also destroy wild-life. This method is expensive and not guaranteed to produce the hoped for results.
