Abstract
A caravan door (1) is connected by restraint means to prevent it slamming in high winds. The restraint means offers only a small resistance to movement on low speeds of door movement and a high resistance on higher speeds. The restraint means comprises a pair of inertia belt reels (4, 5) attached to the wall of the caravan and whose belts (4b, 5b) are attached at their ends (6) to the door. <IMAGE>
Description
DOOR, WINDOW OR THE LIKE HAVING
RESTRAINT MEANS
The invention relates to a hingedly mounted door, window or the like having restraint means to prevent the door or window from slamming into its frame.
It is, of course, known to provide a catch to hold a door in an open condition which will prevent the door from slamming.
However, it is awkward to hook and unhook the door each time and so such means are frequently not used. It is also known to provide a spring loaded arm which urges the door into a closed position.
It is accordingly one object of the invention to provide a door having restraint means which can prevent slamming and which overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art.
Accordingly in one aspect the invention provides a door, window or the like hingedly mounted in a frame therefor, the frame being located in a wall, restraint means connected between the door and the frame or wall, the restraint means being arranged to apply relatively little resistance to movement of the door abort its hinge in either direction intermediate an open and a closed condition when that movement is at a rate less than a predetermined limit, the means being arranged to apply relatively greater resistance when that rate exceeds the predetermined limit.
Preferably the means are arranged to prevent movement of the door about the hinge when the rate of movement exceeds the predetermined limit.
In a preferred embodiment the means comprises two assemblies each comprising a length portion of cord extending between the door and a location on the frame or wall on one of opposing sides of the hinge, one end of each length portion being attached to a rotatably mounted reel, biassing means being associated with each assembly to urge each reel into a condition where each length portion is coiled about its respective reel, the biassing means of the assemblies acting in opposite senses and being of substantially equal strength so as to offer relatively little resistance to movement of the door in either direction, restraint means being associated with each assembly to prevent rate of rotation of each reel beyond a predetermined limit, thereby to prevent rate of movement of the door beyond a predetermined limit.
Although the invention may be applied to a variety of types of doors and windows or like structures, the invention is seen to particularly advantageous effect when applied to a lightweight door of the type fitted to a caravan, where the problems of wind slam are particularly acute and where it is frequently desirable to leave the door open for ventilation.
In order that the invention may be better understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 11 is a perspective view of a door and frame including
restraint means according to the invention; and
Figures 2a, 2b and 2c are each a cross-sectional view through the door and frame of Figure 1 at various conditions of use.
As shown in Figure 1, a door 1 is hingedly mounted in a frame therefor 2 located in a wall 3, e.g. of a caravan body. Two assemblies 4,5 respectively are attached to the wall 3 on either side of the door frame 2 substantially level with the top thereof. Each assembly 4,5, is of generally similar construction to a so-called inertia reel seatbelt assembly of the type fitted to cars and like vehicles and comprises a housing 4a,5a within which a reel (not shown) is rotatably mounted. A length portion of cord or the like 4b,5b, preferably made from a length of 3 to 4 mm diameter nylon or like weather resistant material, is attached to each reel. Each length of cord 4b,5b extends out through a hole 4c,5c in the housing where it is attached to an uppermost corner region of the door on the front face adjacent to the edge remote from the hinge.A guide plate 6 made from a low friction plastics or like material may be present to guide the cord around the door and means may be present on the plate 6 to clamp the free end of each length portion of cord to the door.
Each assembly includes a biassing means (not shown) such as a helical spring to bias the reel towards a condition in which the cord is coiled about the reel. The biassing means of the two assemblies are selected to be of substantially equal strength.
Restraint means (also not shown) are present to ensure that the rate of withdrawal of the cord from the housing is maintained to below a predetermined limit. The restraint means may comprise a radially movable pin or the like on the reel which is urged outwardly by centrifugal forces caused by rotation of the reel to engage a recess in the housing, thereby to limit the rate of rotation of the reel.
Assembly 4 is secured to the wall adjacent to the frame 2, while assembly 5 is secured to the wall 3 at a distance greater than the width of the door 1 away from the frame 2, so that, as shown in Figure 2c, the door can be opened to lie flush against the wall of the caravan.
In use, as the door is moved between the conditions shown in
Figures 2a and 2c then, as long as the rate of movement is less than the predetermined limit, cord 4b will be uncoiled from its reel, while cord 5b is coiled onto its reel and relatively little resistance will be applied to movement of the door. If the rate of movement of the door exceeds the predetermined limit, e.g. if a gust of wind impinges on either side of the door, then the restraint means will prevent that movement thereby preventing the door from slamming into its frame 2 or the wall 3. The predetermined limit is selected to be sufficiently high that normal use of the door is not unduly hampered, but sufficiently low so that the door cannot attain high speeds about its hinge.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown. For example, the assemblies 4,5 may be fixed to the door and the free end of the cord attached to the wall. Although as described, each length portion of cord is separate, only one length need be present attached at each end to a reel, and anchored to the door at an intermediate location. The assemblies may be replaced, e.g. by a single rigid bar extending between the door and wall, one end of which is arranged to reciprocate along an elongate track, restraint means being present to limit the rate of movement along the track to below a predetermined level.
