Abstract

The edging strip is of U-shaped cross section and consists of an outer layer 1 and a U-shaped stiffening core 2, both of thermoplastics. The outer layer is formed into a pair of inwardly directed gripping fingers 4, 5 which are directed away from the open mouth 6 of the strip. The strip is formed by feeding the two materials through a common extrusion die so that they become integrally bonded to each other. Both materials contribute to the resilience of the strip, and the strip is highly resistant to moisture, oils, greases and diesel. <IMAGE>

Description

EDGING STRIPS TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to strips which are intended for covering the exposed edges of materials such as metal, wood, fibreglass, plastics etc. to protect them from damage, provide an aesthetic finish, and/or to cover sharp edges which may otherwise cause injury.
BACKGROUND An existing form of extruded edging strip which is widely used incorporates metal stiffening elements.
However, the metal elements are not very resilient so that the gripping properties of the strip depends almost entirely on the properties of the extruded material. In addition, the metal stiffening elements do not form a very good bond with the extruded material. One consequence of this is that when they are exposed at the cut ends of the strip moisture can easily enter the strip and cause severe deterioration of the strip due to rusting of the metal elements.
An object of the present invention may be viewed as being to provide a form of edge protection strip of unitary structure which has good gripping properties and which is highly moisture-resistant.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention proposes a thermoplastics edging strip of generally U-shaped section having an outer layer and an inner stiffening core, also of generally U-shaped section, which is formed of a more rigid thermoplastics than the outer layer.
Although the inner core is more rigid than the outer layer it can be more resilient than many metals and can thus contribute to the gripping properties of the strip.
The stiffening core may be totally enclosed within the outer layer or it may be exposed on the inner surface of the strip. The core will usually be formed at the same time as the outer layer by an extrusion process so that the two become integrally bonded together during formation of the strip.
The inner core is preferably of a semi-rigid thermoplastic such as polypropylene.
The outer layer is preferably of a relatively flexible and resilient thermoplastics and may be of synthetic or natural rubber such as SANTOPRENE or it may be of a synthetic plastics material.
In common with existing edge protection strips, the two limbs of the strip will normally be provided with a pair of opposed gripping fingers extending continuously along the length of the strip and being directed away from the mouth of the strip. These gripping fingers are preferably integrally formed with the outer resilient layer of the strip.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention is exemplified in the accompanying drawing which is a transverse cross section through an edging strip of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The edging strip is of substantially constant U-shaped cross section and consists of an outer layer 1 and an inner stiffening core 2.
The inner core 2 is also of U-shaped cross section and is enclosed within the outer layer l save for its inner surface 3 which is exposed except for narrow strips adjacent to the ends of the arms of the U-section where the outer layer is formed into a pair of inwardly directed gripping fingers 4, 5. These gripping fingers extend continuously along the strip and are directed away from the open mouth 6 of the strip towards the base of the U-section. Thus, when the strip is passed over an edge to be protected the fingers 4, 5 are urged apart to resiliently grip that edge.
The outer layer 1, including the integral gripping fingers 4 and 5, is formed of a flexible and resilient thermoplastic rubber such as SANTOPRENE. The core 2 is formed of a resilient semi-rigid thermoplastic such as polypropylene. (A suitable type of polypropylene is available with the code ICI GSF 113.) The strip is formed by feeding the two materials through a common extrusion die so that they become integrally bonded to each other.
Since the two materials both have inherent resilience they both contribute to the resilience of the strip, but because the inner core 2 is more rigid than the outer layer it provides the strip with an inherent stiffness which makes it convenient to handle. Since the strip is formed entirely of thermoplastics it is highly resistant to moisture, oils, greases and diesel.
