Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO SEALING STRIPS (71) We, DRAFTEX DEVELOP MENT A.G., a joint stock company organised under the laws of Switzerland, of Schönbühl 3, 6300 Zug, Switzerland, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to sealing strips particularly though not exclusively for use m motor vehicle body construction.
According to the invention, there is provided a channel-shaped sealing strip having on one outside wall of the channel, adjacent the channel mouth, a lip having a surface extending alongside the mouth and facing across the mouth at an obtuse angle to the plane thereof, the lip carrying a sealing member which runs along the length of the lip on the said surface thereof and is made of softer material than the lip and is for sealingly pressing against part of a vehicle body around an opening therein when the strip is mounted on a flange around the opening According to the invention, there is also provided a channel-shaped sealing strip, comprising U-shaped flexible metal carrier means, elastomeric material enclosing the metal carrier means, the material on one outside wall of the channel extending proud of the base of the channel to form a first lip running longitudinally of the channel and extending proud of the mouth of the channel to form a second lip also running longitudinally of the channel, the second lip having a surface extending alongside the mouth and facing across the mouth at an obtuse angle to the plane thereof, a sealing member of cellular elastomeric material softer than the first-mentioned elastomeric material and attached to and running along the said surface of the second lip, and gripping ribs of elastomeric material attached to and running along opposite inside facing walls of the channel whereby when the strip is mounted on a flange around an opening in a vehicle body the gripping ribs press against the side of the flange and the sealing member sealingly presses against part of the vehicle body around the opening.
A sealing strip embodying the invention for sealing the luggage boot opening of a motor vehicle will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through the sealing strip before it is fitted to the vehicle body; Figure 2 is a view corresponding to Figure 1 but showing the sealing strip in position on the vehicle body; and Figure 3 is a view corresponding to Figure 1 but showing a modified construction.
As shown in Figure 1, the sealing strip consists of a U-section strip 9 of rubber or plastics material such as polyvinylchloride in which is embedded a metal carrier 10 which is also of U-section. The metal carrier may comprise a series of interconnected or entirely unconnected U-shaped metal strips or elements or may be made of wire or other suitable form so as to be longitudinally flexible. On the outside of one wall of the strip 9 is formed a sealing member 11 which extends upwardly, above the closed base of the channel, to form a lip 12, and downwardly, below the channel opening, to form a lip 17.
On the undersurface of the lip 17 is attached (so as to run along the entire length of this surface of the lip 17) a flexible sealing member 20. The sealing member 20 is made of very soft material, such as a very low density PVC foamed material. It is advantageously in the form of tubing and may be adhesively secured to the lip 17.
Figure 2 shows the sealing strip attached in position on a flange 5 which forms the termination of the motor vehicle body panel 6 at the edge of the luggage boot opening. A part 7 of the motor body work panel adjoins the mounting flange 5 and provides a drainage groove between the flange and a part 8.
It will be seen that mounting the sealing strip on the flange 5 causes the lip 17 and the sealing member 20 to be pressed against the part 7, the lip 17 becoming generally aligned with the surface of the part 7.
The effect of this is that the sealing member 20, which as explained above is of very soft consistency, becomes substantially flattened between the lip 17 and the part 7 of the vehicle body and provides an excellent seal against any irregularites in the part 7.
Figure 2 also shows the luggage boot lid 2 having an edge 1 and incorporating a stiffening member 3 in the form of a sheet metal plate which may be welded or otherwise secured to the lid 2. When the luggage lid 2 is closed onto the luggage boot opening, it sealingly presses against the lip 12, bending the lip as shown in Figure 2.
The channel shaped part of the sealing strip incorporates gripping ribs 18 and 19 which run longitudinally along the inside wall of the channel and sealingly engage the flange 5.
The part 11 may be formed integrally with the material of the strip 9, such as by being extruded integrally therewith. The part 11 may be of softer material than the material of the strip 9, and may thus be produced by a duplex extrusion. By the same means, if desired, the ribs 18 and 19 may be made of softer material than the material of the strip 9.
If desired, the sealing member 20 may also be made integral with the material of the part 11 (and also with the material of the strip 9 if desired), again by means of duplex extrusion.
Instead, however, the part 11 may be made separately and adhesively secured to the strip 9. the sealing member 20 being either formed integrally with the part 11 in this case or separate and adhesively secured thereto.
The material of the strip 9, the material of the part 11, and the material of the sealing member 20 may each be rubber or plastics.
Figure 3 shows an alternative position for the sealing member 20, in this case it being located in a cleft 22. In addition, the structure of Figure 3 has its ribs 18 and 19 differently arranged and it also has a squarer cross-section.
The sealing member 20 may for example be foamed polyvinyl-chloride in cylindrical form, with a diameter of approximately 4.8 mm as sold under part number P3020 by Norton GmbH, of Postfach 100, 5047 Weseling, Germany.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A channel-shaped sealing strip having on one outside wall of the channel, adjacent the channel mouth, a lip having a surface extending alongside the mouth and facing across the mouth at an obtuse angle to the plane thereof, the lip carrying a sealing member which runs along the length of the lip on the said surface thereof and is made of softer material than the lip and is for sealingly pressing against part of a vehicle body around an opening therein when the strip is mounted on a flange around the opening.
2. A strip according to claim 1, in which the sealing member is made of low density foamed material such as foamed PVC.
3. A strip according to claim 1 or 2, in which the sealing member is adhesively attached to the lip.
4. A strip according to claim 1 or 2, in which the sealing member is integral with the lip and produced by duplex extrusion.
5. A strip according to any preceding claim, in which the lip is integral with the material of the channel.
6. A strip according to any preceding claim, in which the lip and/or the material of the channel and/or the material of the sealing member is rubber or plastics.
7. A strip according to any preceding claim, in which the channel incorporates flexible metal carrier means.
8. A strip according to any preceding claim, in which the channel has, on one or each of the inside walls of the channel, one or more gripping ribs extending longitudinally along the inside of the channel for gripping and sealing against the said flange in use.
9. A channel-shaped sealing strip, comprising U-shaped flexible metal carrier means, elastomeric material enclosing the metal carrier means, the material on one outside wall of the channel extending proud of the base of the channel to form a first lip running longitudinally of the channel and extending proud of the mouth of the channel to form a second lip also running longitudinally of the channel, the second lip having a surface extending alongside the mouth and facing across the mouth at an obtuse angle to the plane thereof, a sealing member of cellular elastomeric material softer than the first-mentioned elastomeric material and attached to and running along the said surface of the second lip, and gripping ribs of elastomeric material attached to and running along opposite inside facing walls of the channel, whereby when the strip is mounted on a flange around an opening in a vehicle body the
