There is disclosed a timber clad, extruded window frame member comprising an extruded frame member 11 having a clad face 12 comprising a dovetail section 13 and a timber cladding 14 having a complementary dovetail section 15 engaged thereon. <IMAGE>

Description

WINDOW FRAMES This invention relates to window frames and particularly such of extruded material such as aluminium or plastics materials.
Aluminium frames, unless the extrusion's exposed surface is properly finished, tend to corrode over time. Plastics materials frames, whilst not liable to corrosion, are not particularly attractively finished, and in any event provide for little choice of colour or texture.
The present invention provides window frames improved in these regards over prior art frames.
The invention comprises a timber clad, extruded window frame member comprising an extruded frame member having a clad face comprising a dovetail section and a timber cladding having a complementary dovetail section engaged thereon.
By timber" is meant wood or plastic extrusion or moulding having the appearance of wood or any other decorative finish. The general idea is that the structural and functional frame members are produced in the usual way by extrusion while a more expensive or less structurally or functionally suitable material of, however, a more traditional or decorative appearance is attached to the extrusion so as to cover up the undecorative extruded frame section.
The dovetail section may be skeletal, that on the extrusion needing to comprise only angled fins over which the correspondingly grooved cladding can be slid.
The arrangement is suitable for main frame members, mullion and transom members and for sash window frame members.
The invention also comprises window frames made up of frame members according to the invention. It will be appreciated that not all the frame members of a window need be clad, or, if clad, clad in the same material.
Embodiments of timber clad, extruded window frame members according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : -Figure 1 is a section through a main frame member; Figure 2 is a section through a mullion or transom member; and Figure 3 is a section through a sash member.
The frame members illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 comprise an extruded frame member 11 having a clad face 12 comprising a dovetail section 13, and a timber cladding 14 having a complementary dovetail section 15 engaged on the section 13.
The dovetail section in each case is skeletal, comprising angled fins 13a,13b arranged such that the cladding is held fast against removal except, of course, by sliding along the fins 13a,13b during assembly.
The cladding 14 can of course be of any desired profile and need not, as mentioned above, be of wood, though wood will be preferred to give a traditional appearance.
The cladding 14 is disposed on the inside of the frame as illustrated, the glazing bead Ila (shown only in Figure 2) being external. Cladding could likewise, however, be applied to the external face of the window if desired.

Claims (6)

1. A timber clad, extruded window frame member comprising an extruded frame member having a clad face comprising a dovetail section and a timber cladding having a complementary dovetail section engaged thereon.
2. A frame member according to claim 1, in which the dovetail section is skeletal.
3 A frame member according to claim 1 or claim 2, comprising a main frame member.
4. A frame member according to claim 1 or claim 2, a transom or mullion member.
5. A frame member according to claim 1 or claim 2, comprising a sash frame member.
6. A window frame made up of members according to any one of claims 1 to 5.
