Abstract
Transmission through a window or other glazed unit is reduced by applying a layer of metalized plastics material to the material with which the window or other unit is glazed, by means of an intermediate layer of self-stick highly plasticised PVC laminate having self-stick properties on both sides.
Description
REDUCING TRANSMISSION THROUGH WINDOWS
OR OTHER GLAZED UNITS
This invention relates to materials and a method for reducing transmission through windows or other glazed units, e.g. roofs, car windscreens, etc.
The effects of solar heat and glare, and of winter heat loss, through windows or other glazed units, are intermittent, depending on what weather conditions pertain at the time. It would be desirable to be able to reduce transmission through a window or other glazed unit in response to the intermittent need.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of reducing transmission through a window or other glazed unit, comprising applying a layer of metalized plastics material to the material with which the window or other is glazed, by means of an intermediate layer of self-stick laminate having self-stick properties on both sides.
The metalized layer reduces transmission through the window, and can be removed when not required.
Preferably, the self-stick laminate is highly plasticised PVC or a like material. Such materials, known in single sided form for motor vehicle tax discs, facilitate repeated application and removal in response to changing weather conditions.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided a window or other glazed unit, wherein a layer of metalized plastics material is attached to the material with which the window or other unit is glazed by means of a self-stick laminate which has self-stick properties on both sides.
The invention also extends to a pack containing a sheet of metalized plastics material and a sheet of self-stick laminate which has self-stick properties on both sides, for use in the method of the invention.
A further aspect of the invention is a sheet of PVC which is highly plasticised on both sides for use in the method of the invention.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example.
In order to reduce solar heat and glare, or reduce heat loss, through a window or other glazed unit, in response to the intermittent need, a layer of metalized plastics material is applied to the glazing material which may be glass, plastics or a laminate of both. The window or other unit may be a window or windscreen of a car, or a conservatory roof, for example. The metalized plastics material reflects part of the light or heat, and may be tinted to further reduce the light and heat transmitted.
The metalized plastics material is applied by means of an intermediate layer of self-stick PVC laminate which has selfstick properties on both sides. The self-stick properties are provided by highly plasticised surfaces of the PVC and allow the sheet to be peeled on and off easily. The two layers may be peeled off singly in which case they would normally be applied separately as the need arises. Alternatively the layers may be peeled off the window together, in which case they would normally be reapplied together, when the need arises.
The layers may be cut to fit the window or other unit exactly.
Claims (6)
1. A method of reducing transmission through a window or other
glazed unit, comprising applying a layer of metalized
plastics material to the glazing material with which the
window or other unit is glazed, by means of an intermediate
layer of self-stick laminate having self-stick properties on
both sides.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the self-stick
laminate is highly plasticised PVC or a like material.
3. A window or other glazed unit, wherein a layer of metalized
plastics material is attached to the material with which the
window or other unit is glazed by means of a self-stick
laminate which has self-stick properties on both sides.
4. A window or other glazed unit as claimed in Claim 3, wherein
the self-stick laminate is highly plasticised PVC or a like
material.
5. A pack containing a sheet of metalized plastics material and
a sheet of self-stick laminate which has self-stick
properties on both sides, for use in the method of Claim 1
6. A sheet of PC material which is highly plasticised so as to
be self-adhesive on both sides, for use in the matter of
Claim 1 or 2.
