Abstract

An insert (10) for embedding into concrete and for receiving a wall tie (20), has a cross-section shaped such that a wall tie (20) received in the insert (10) is held against the rear wail of the insert. Preferably, the cross-section of the insert (10) is shaped such that no lateral movement of the wail tie (20) is allowed. <IMAGE>

Description

An Insert The invention relates to an insert for embedding into concrete and for receiving a wall tie.
Known inserts or slots have always been designed with a dove-tailed cross-section which allows the slot to be self-anchoring when embedded into concrete.
However, the shape of the insert means that a wall tie received therein is not held firmly and can move forwards and backwards with respect to the slot. In order to overcome this problem, users of the known insert commonly inject mortar into the slot in the vicinity of a wall tie in order to securely hold the tie in position. Although the tie is then held securely, relative movement of the tie along the longitudinal axis of the slot is also prevented. This can cause severe damage to adjacent tied walls in the event of settlement or expansion.
An object of the invention is to provide an insert for embedding into concrete and for receiving a wall tie which avoids the disadvantages mentioned above.
The invention provides an insert for embedding into concrete and for receiving a wall tie, wherein the insert has a cross-section shaped such that a wall tie received in the insert is held against the rear wall of the insert.
Preferably, the cross-section is also shaped such that no lateral movement of a wall tie received therein is allowed.
Preferably, the insert is substantially U-sháped, the width of the cross-section being greatest adjacent the rear wall of the insert.
Preferably, the insert is self-anchoring.
Preferably, the overall depth of the insert is a maximum of 20 millimetres.
An insert according to the invention ensures that ties are held securely in the insert without the need for permanent fixing by the injection of mortar. The insert is self-anchoring in order to avoid the necessity for external lugs to be provided which occupy valuable space within a concrete structure. As a result of the design of the insert, the servicablility load is good.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a cross-section of an insert according to the invention, and Figure 2 shows the insert of Figure 1 with a wall tie inserted therein.
Figure 1 shows an insert 10 having a rear wall 12, curved side portions 14 and spacer members 16. The overall configuration of the insert 10 is such that the cross-section thereof is substantially U-shaped.
However, the side portions 14 project laterally beyond the spacer members 16 in order to provide self-anchoring means by which the insert can be anchored into a concrete member. Furthermore, the side portions 14 provide recesses adjacent the rear wall 12 into which the feet of a wall tie can be inserted. The spacer members 16 project forwardly from the side portions 14 and maybe arranged to diverge slightly away from the side portions 14 such that, after being embedded in concrete, the spacer members 16 are brought into a substantially parallel configuration due to the action of the surrounding concrete.
The insert is manufactured from steel approximately 1 millimetre thick and has an overall-depth of 15-20 millimetres in order to be readily embedded in a concrete member having reinforcement members. The overall width of the insert is approximately 20 millimetres.
Figure 2 shows the insert 10 described above with a wall tie 20 inserted therein. The feet 22 of the wall tie 20 are located in the recesses of the insert 10 formed by the side portions 14. The arrangement of the side portions 14 ensures that the feet 22 are held adjacent the rear wall 12 and do not allow lateral or forward and rearward play. The wall tie 20 is, however, movable along the longitudinal axis of the insert 10.
The invention is not limited to the specific embodiment described above. Other designs of insert are envisaged, provided that the feet of a wall tie are held adjacent the rear wall of the insert. The spacer members need not be substantially parallel but should preferably be shaped to allow self-anchoring of the insert in a concrete structure.

Claims (9)
