Abstract
An infusion device for location within a container holding a fluid comprises a receptacle (2) for holding the substance to be infused, a filter housing (4), one end of which is connected to the receptacle (2) and a plunger (9) which is moveable within the filter housing (4). The plunger (9) is moveable from a first position in which the substance is free to react with the surrounding fluid to a second position which seals the substance in the receptacle (2) from the surrounding fluid. <IMAGE>
Description
AN INFUSION DEVICE
The present invention relates to an infusion device, in particular, to an infusion device for location within a tea or coffee pot.
Devices are known for the purpose of making tea or coffee which require the user to remove the device containing the infusion from the liquid once the required strength has been reached. Such devices are used with tea leaves, tea bags, coffee grains or coffee bags. In addition, there are devices which are intended to ensure that loose tea leaves or coffee grains are prevented from being poured from a tea or coffee pot by the action of a perforated plunger or the like which allows passage of fluid but filters the loose leaves or grains. The disadvanatage of the perforated plunger type is that the liquid in the tea or coffee pot is allowed to continue reacting with the tea leaves or coffee grains even after the required strength has been reached thus, the liquid which is left to stand for further cups of tea or coffee is very strong in flavour.
According to the present invention there is provided an infusion device for location within a container holding a fluid comprising a receptacle for holding the substance to be infused, a filter housing, one end of which is connected to the receptacle, and a plunger which is moveable within the filter housing from a first position in which the substance is free to react with the surrounding fluid to a second position which seals the substance in the receptacle from the surrounding fluid.
Such a device allows the substance to be infused to react freely with the hot liquid in a tea or coffee pot until the required strength is reached.
The plunger can then be depressed to seal off the tea leaves or coffee grains from further contact with the liquid. In this way, the user can ensure that subsequent cups of the beverage will be of the same strength as the first cups.
Preferably, the filter housing is closed at its other end by a lid having a hole therethrough to allow movement of the stem of the plunger.
Preferably, the stem of the plunger is provided with a gripping portion thus facilitating movement of the plunger within the filter housing.
Preferably, the end of the filter housing which is closed by the lid has a flanged rim in order to facilitate location in the neck of the container.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded perspective view of the infusion device.
The infusion device, indicated generally at 1, comprises a receptacle 2 for holding a tea bag, a coffee bag, tea leaves or coffee grains. The receptacle 2 is a hollow cylinder closed at one end 3. The receptacle 2 is connectable to a filter housing 4 which is in the form of a hollow cylinder with solid rims 5 and 6. The rims 5 and 6 are spaced by a filtering mesh 7. The upper rim 6 is flanged for the purpose of sitting the device in the open neck of a suitable tea or coffee pot. The filter housing 4 is closed by a lid 8. A plunger 9 having a stem 10 and gripping portion 11 is moveable within a hole 12 located in the lid 8. The plunger 9 is of such a diameter that it is able to slide within the filter housing 4 from a position adjacent to the upper rim 6 to a position adjacent to the lower rim 5.
In use, the receptacle 2 is secured to the filter housing 4 and the substance to be infused is introduced into the receptacle 2 via the open end of filter housing 4. In this embodiment, the filter housing 4 is provided with a protrusion 14 which protrudes outwardly and will co-operate with an
L-shaped groove 13 in the receptacle 2 when the filter housing 4 and receptacle 2 are pushed together as a sliding fit. The receptacle 2 is secured to the filter housing 4 by twisting the parts with respect to each other and can be removed for cleaning purposes. The lid 8 and plunger 9 are then placed over the filter housing 4 with the plunger 9 drawn up to its highest position close to rim 6.
The device 1 is then placed in a pot of boiling water such that flange 6 rests over the hole. When the substance to be infused has reacted with the water sufficiently, the plunger 9 is pushed downwards until it seals off the the substance in receptacle 2 from the surrounding fluid thus preventing the resulting beverage from becoming stronger in flavour.
Claims (5)
1. An infusion device for location within a container holding a fluid comprising a receptacle for holding the substance to be infused, a filter housing, one end of which is connected to the receptacle, and a plunger which is moveable within the filter housing from a first position in which the substance is free to react with the surrounding fluid to a second position which seals the substance in the receptacle from the surrounding fluid.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the filter housing is closed at its other end by a lid having a hole therethrough to allow movement of the plunger
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the plunger is provided with a gripping portion.
4. A device as claimed in any preceding claim in which the end of the filter housing which is furthest from the receptacle is provided with a flanged rim.
5. An infusion device substantially as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
