Abstract

A fly fishing reel has its 'check' feature provided by a system of wafers 3 and 4 of magnetic material which are bonded to the fixed and moving portions Fig 1 and Fig 2 of the reel, the exposed face of the wafers 3 on the fixed portion being of opposite polarity to the exposed face of the wafers 4 on the moving portion. The gap between wafers 3 and 4 is determined by the thickness of collar 5. <IMAGE>

Description

FLY FISHING REEL THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A FLY FISHING REEL WITH MAGNETIC 'CHECK'.
REELS USED FOR FLY FISHING ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE SOME FORM OF 'CHECK' FEATURE, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS 'DRAG'.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS FEATURE IS TO PREVENT THE FISHING LINE FROM RUNNING FREELY OFF THE REEL AS THE LINE IS PULLED FOREWARD FROM THE REEL DURING CASTING OPERATIONS, FREELY RUNNING LINE CAN RESULT IN TANGLES AND ALSO BUNCHING OF THE LINE AT THE ROD RING POSITIONS.
THE EXISTING MEANS OF APPLYING THE 'CHECK' IS ALMOST INVARIABLY BY THE PROVISION OF A'RATCHET MECHANISM' WHICH IS INHERENTLY NOISEY.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION THE 'CHECK' FEATURE IS PROVIDED BY A MAGNETIC SYSTEM AND IS THEREFORE SILENT.
THE PRESENT INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED BY WAY OF THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE OF ITS APPLICATION WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING IN WHICH @ FIG 1 AND FIG 2 SHOW IN PERSPECTIVE THE FIXED PORTION AND THE MOVING PORTION OF A TYPICAL FLY REEL RESPECTIVELY.
IN THIS EXAMPLE THE MAGNETIC 'CHECK' IS PROVIDED BY AN ARRANGEMENT OF WAFERS (3 AND 4 ON THE DRAWING) OF MAGNETIC MATERIAL BONDED TO THE FIXED AND MOVING PORTIONS OF THE REEL.
THE MAIN BODY OF THE FIXED AND MOVING PORTIONS BEING MADE OF THE WSUAL ALLOY MATERIAL WILL NOT AFFECT THE MAGNETIC ARRANGEMENT.
REFERRING TO THE DRAWING THE EXPOSED FACE OF THE WAFERS 3 ON THE FIXED PORTION NEED TO BE OF OPPOSITE POLARITY TO THE EXPOSED FACE OF THE WAFERS 4 ON THE MOVING PORTION. THE WAFERS 3 ARE ALSO BONDED AT THE SAME RADIAL DISTANCE FROM THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE REEL AS THE WAFERS 4.
FLY REELS ARE AVAILABLE IN A RANGE OF SIZES AND THE AMOUNT OF 'CHECK' REQUIRSD WILL DEPEND MAINLY ON THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THE REEL (DUE TO INERTIA).
THE AMOUNT OF 'CHECK' AND ITS EFFECT WILL BE A FUNCTION OF THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF WAFERS USED, THEIR RADIAL DSTANCE FROM THE CENTRAL AXIS, THE 'AIR GAP' BETWEEN OPPOSING POLE FACES AND THE MAGNETIC MATERIAL USED.
NUMEROUS MAGNETIC MATERIALS RANGING FROM SOFTIRON TO THOSE HAVING HIGH 'COERCIVITY' AND 'REMANENCE' VALUES KNOWN AS 'PERMANENT MAGNETS' SUCH AS COBALT, NICKEL AND SOME 'SINTERED' MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE.
FOR THE PURPOSE OF CLARITY THE WAFERS 3 AND 4 ON THE DRAWING HAVE BEEN SHOWN DISPROPORTIONATELY LARGE. IN PRACTICE USING 'PERMANENT MAGNETIC' MATERIAL EACH WAFER WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MM IN DIAMETER AND APPROXIMATELY 0.75 MM THICK.
THE WAFERS CAN BE BONDED TO THE FIXED AND MOVING PORTIONS AS NEAR TO THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE REEL AS IS PRACTICABLE. (THE EFFECT OF THIS WILL BE TO 'SMOOTH' THE PATE OF CHANGE OF ROTATIONAL SPEED AS THE POLE FACES PASS FROM ALIGNMENT TO MID-POSITION) IN ADDITION TO THE BONDING (ADHESION) THE WAFERS 3 AND 4 WILL BE LOCATED IN DEPRESSIONS MACHINED INTO THE FIXED AND MOVING PORTIONS.
THE 'AIR GAP' BETWEEN MAGNETIC POLE FACES WILL BE DETEMINED BY THE THICKNESS OF THE COLLAR 5 SHOWN ON FIG 2 OF THE DRAWING. COLLAR 5 BEING MADE OF ALLOY MATERIAL.
THE ABOVE SYSTEM OF EMPLOYING SMALL WAFERS IS JUST ONE METHOD OF APPLYING MAGNETIC 'CHECK'. OTHER METHODS MAY WELL BE AS EFFECTIVE, FOR EXAMPLE THE WAFERS COULD TAKE THE FORM OF A SINGLE ANNULAR RNG BONDED TO EACH OF THE FIXED AND MOVING PORTIONS.
