Description

"TOOL HOLDER" The invention relates to a tool holder, e.g. for use in a mining machine.
A tool holder is known having a tool pocket for the tool, a nozzle insert for spraying water, the nozzle insert being mounted in a bore in the tool holder, and conduit means for supplying water to the nozzle insert.
Such tool holders, which may be used for heading machines and mining machines, are known for use in heading machines and mining machines used underground.
The tool nozzle has the task on the one hand of cooling the cut channel and on the other hand of preventing too much dust from developing. To reduce the consumption of water it is already known from EP 67 145 B1 to connect a valve in the conduit means for supplying water to the nozzle. This valve is controlled by the tool itself. The valve is only opened and water supply is thus only possible when the tool is in working engagement.
The actual nozzles for supplying the water to the tools in the tool holders are usually screwed into a tapped bore. (See "DE-Kurznachrichten aus Bergtechnik und Kohlenveredelung des Steinkohlenbergbauvereins", No.
117, page 3, 1985). The tapped bores can be easily deformed by the action of external force, so that the nozzles can no longer be screwed out and thus problemfree replacement of worn tool holder parts and nozzles is impossible.
In German Patent Application No. P 39 02 222 a pick arrangement is described for controlling the water supply for jets to the cut channel or to the pick. The arrangement consists of a pick supported for restricted axial movement, a tool holder with a water supply channel, an on-off valve and a water nozzle. The on-off valve is operable via a plunger arranged axially parallel to and laterally in relation to the tool shank and below the tool support. The plunger is arranged to project out of the tool holder under a support shoulder of the pick head and is axially displaceable according to the axial path of the tool. As a result of this arrangement, control of the valve is no longer effected by the tool shank itself and thus the tool shank length is completely insignificant.
A further problem with the known nozzle apparatuses occurs with releasably carried holder devices. In this case, the water necessary for the jets must be delivered to a seal point via bores from a base member to a holder device, and this likewise causes problems.
A cutting roll is known from DE 36 30 636 C1 where the tool controls the nozzle receptacle via a spring element. Thus, for example, the nozzle receptacle can be tilted via a disk spring upon pressing in of a tool, paths thereby becoming free for the water. With this arrangement, the problem of a seal between the base member and the holder device for a tool does not arise and the resilient bearing provided with this device does not essentially act as a seal but rather enables possible tilting movement of the nozzle receptacle.
In contrast, the object of the present invention is to provide a nozzle arrangement which is-easy to assemble and dismantle without a thread arrangement and which on the other hand acts as a sealing member between base member and holder device.
According to the present invention, there is provided a tool holder comprising a base member having a support surface on which is mounted a holder device; a tool pocket in said base member and holder device for holding a tool; a bore, parts of which are provided in the base member and holder device respectively, the part of the bore which is disposed in the holder device extending to an outer surface of the latter and having smaller and larger diameter portions which meet at a step, the larger diameter portion extending to the support surface; a nozzle insert which is mounted in the bore and which has a stop edge which engages the step, the nozzle insert being seated on a deformable sealing element in the bore; and conduit means for conveying water to said nozzle insert.
Preferably, the basemember and holder device are secured together by releasable fastening means.
Thus the base member may have a projecting portion which passes through an aperture in the holder device so as to extend outwardly of the latter, the fastening means comprising a member which passes through a hole in the projecting portion outwardly of the holder device.
Thus in the preferred embodiment, the holder and the seal of the nozzle insert is effected automatically in that the holder device to be fastened to the base member presses the nozzle insert into a corresponding bore, against the reset force of a resilient seal. In this way, two different things are achieved with one means, namely on the one hand a threadless support of the nozzle insert in the receiving bore is ensured both in the base member and in the holder device, and on the other hand sealing of the lower part of the nozzle insert is achieved at the same time by this support.
The invention is illustrated, merely by way of example, in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional view of a tool holder according to the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, a tool holder according to the present invention comprises a base member 32 having a support surface 31 on which a holder device 33 is supported, the parts 32, 33 being interconnected by a wedge-shaped releasable fastening means 38. The base member 32 has a projecting portion 41 which passes through an aperture 42 in the holder device 33 so as to extend outwardly of the latter, the fastening means 38 passing through a hole 43 in the projecting portion 41 outwardly of the holder device 33. In the base member 32 and the holder device 33 there is provided a tool pocket 30 for holding a tool, which is not shown in the drawing.
The support surface 31 constitutes a parting plane between the holder device 33 and a base member 32.
Starting from this parting plane 31, there are provided bore parts both in the holder device 33 and in the base member 32, the bore parts together-forming a receiving bore 34 in which is mounted a nozzle insert 35. While the part of the receiving bore 34 in the base member 32 has the same diameter over its whole depth, the part of the receiving bore 34 in the holder device 33 is stepped, a larger diameter portion extending to the parting plane 31 and adjacent to the larger diameter portion there being a smaller diameter portion. In this way a step 36 is created in the receiving bore 34 at the junction between the smaller and larger diameter portions. The smaller diameter portion extends to the outer surface 40 of the holder device 33.
The nozzle insert 35 has a stop edge which engages the step 36.
In the lower part of the receiving bore 34 in the base member 32 there is provided an elastically deformable sealing element 37 on which the nozzle insert 35 is seated. The nozzle insert 35 comprises a guide channel, which is connected to a channel 39 in the base member 32. A water supply to the nozzle itself is effected via the channel 39.
It can be seen that by positioning the holder device 33 on the base member 32, the nozzle insert 35 is pressed firmly onto the sealing element 37 by the engagement between the said stop edge of the nozzle insert 35 and the step 36. The sealing element 37 on the one hand thereby effects the necessary seal, and on the other hand the elastically deformable sealing element 37 creates a secure and fixed seat for the nozzle insert 35 in the receiving bore 34.
