Description

"CUTTER APPARATUS FOR USE IN MINING MACHINES" This invention relates to cutter apparatus for use in mining machines.
A known cutter apparatus is described in DE 35 31 781 C1. In this known arrangement, the apparatus comprises a cutter shank which is essentially designed as a rectangular body and extends in the driving direction, and a locking wedge, which connects the cutter shank to a cutter pocket, is inserted from the front so that the locking wedge cannot come loose during operation.
It is also known (DE-U-89 06 154) that the locking wedge can be inserted transversely to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shank, the locking wedge being inserted into a location groove narrowing from the rear to the front side.
In order to improve the positive-locking connection between the cutter pocket and the locking wedge and in order to avoid bending moments which could act on the locking wedge, it is known that the locking wedge in the cutter pocket can be guided over its entire length in a groove, i.e. so that one part of the locking wedge engages in a positive-locking manner in a groove of the cutter pocket and another part thereof engages in a groove provided in the cutter shank.
Starting from an arrangement in which the cutter body is immovably fixed in the cutter pocket, the object of the invention is to provide a static seal to enable water or other liquid to be fed into the cutter head.
According to the present invention, there is provided cutter apparatus for use in mining machines comprising a cutter body having a cutter head, a cutter shank integrally adjoining the cutter head, a spray nozzle, and a bore which communicates with the spray nozzle; a cutter pocket which is adapted to be carried by a mining machine and which is provided with a location space in which the cutter shank can be secured in position, the cutter pocket having liquid conduit means therein; and a sealing member which is adapted'to be mounted in a part of the liquid conduit means so as to project from the cutter pocket, the sealing member having a liquid passage therethrough; the arrangement being such that the cutter apparatus may-be assembled so that the cutter shank is mounted in the cutter pocket and the sealing member is disposed both in the said part of the liquid conduit means and in the said bore, whereby liquid supplied to the liquid conduit means may pass through the liquid passage to the spray nozzle.
In one embodiment, the spray nozzle is disposed adjacent a cutter carried by a cutter head, the bore communicating with the spray nozzle by way of a duct which passes through the cutter head.
Preferably, there is a locking member which may be introduced into aligned grooves in the cutter shank and the cutter pocket respectively, the said grooves extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shank.
The locking member may be a locking wedge.
The spray nozzle is preferably constituted by a removable insert carried by a part of the cutter head.
Thus the spray nozzle may be screw threaded into the said part of the cutter head.
Due to this arrangement, leakage problems can be avoided, no long channel bores are necessary, and furthermore simple assembly of cutter body and sealing member may be effected, and finally the use of commercially available spray nozzles is possible without difficulty.
The invention is illustrated, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows in an exploded method of representation the components of a first embodiment of a cutter apparatus according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows the said first embodiment with the said components assembled; and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but illustrating a second embodiment of a cutter apparatus according to the present invention.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, a cutter apparatus for use in mining machines comprises a cutter body 1 which essentially consists of a cutter head 2 and a cutter shank 3, the cutter head 2 carrying a cutter 29. In this arrangement, the cutter shank 3, which integrally adjoins the cutter head 2, extends essentially in the longitudinal direction of the cutter head 2, and is thus orientated as an extension of the cutter head 2 and extends along its longitudinal axis.
A plurality of cutter pockets 4 are arranged on a mining machine (not shown). Each cutter pocket 4 has a location space 9 for locating the cutter shank 3, the location space 9 being of bevelled design at the top marginal edges for easier insertion of the cutter shank 3.
Provided in the cutter shank 3 is a location groove 6 which extends transversely to the longitudinal axis of the cutter shank 3.
Provided in the cutter pocket 4 is a location groove 12 for locating a locking wedge 5, the locking wedge 5 having a wedge head 5a. The location groove 6 is formed in the cutter shank 3 so that the actual cutter body 1 is secured in position by inserting the locking wedge 5 into the locatino grooves 12 and 6.
The location groove 12 is here designed so as to be continuous on one side in the cutter pocket 4.
The locking wedge 5 is held in the cutter shank 3 and secures the cutter shank 3 in position via a frictional connection to at least one of the two large side walls of the location space 9. At the same time, the locking wedge 5 is designed to be of such a length that it engages with its end part into the opposite wall of the cutter pocket 4 so that wedging is additionally effected here between locking wedge 5 and cutter pocket 4.
The interplay between these constructional elements reliably secures the cutter shank 3 in position in the location space 9 via frictional and positivelocking connection, though easy release of the locking wedge 5 is possible, since the wedge head 5a is relatively easy to reach.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, a liquid channel 27 is made inside the cutter pocket 4 for feeding water or other liquid for spraying the cutter 29 or the cutting track cut by the latter. To this end, a removable nozzle insert 26 is screw threaded into a shoulder part 2a of the cutter head 2. A press seal 14 made of an elastic material and having a waterconducting passage 18 therethrough is inserted into a bore 28 in the cutter pocket 4 so as to project from the latter, the bore 28 communicating with the liquid channel 27. When the cutter shank 3 has been introduced into the location space 9 and the cutter head 2 has been tightened against the cutter pocket 4 by the locking wedge 5, the press seal 14 is at the same time pressed into the corresponding bore 28 in the cutter pocket 4 and also into a bore 30 in the cutter head 2 which communciates with the spray nozzle 26. The press seal 14 thus reliably seals the transition between the two components 2,4. Since the cutter body 1 is immovably fixed in the cutter pocket 4, this static seal can be used so that the water may be directly fed into the cutter head 2, whereby water supplied to the liquid channel 27 may pass through the liquid passage 18 and so to the spray nozzle 26.
Figure 3 shows a cutter body 1 and'a cutter pocket 4 as well as a locking wedge 5 of a second embodiment, but in this arrangement a water-conducting duct 20 is recessed in the actual cutter head 2, the duct 20 communicating with the bore 30. Moreover, the cutter insert 26, instead of being screwed into the shoulder part 2a, is disposed adjacent the cutter 29.
Otherwise, the cutter shown in Figure 3 is designed in the same way as that in Figures 1 and 2.
