Abstract

A motor vehicle parking aid allows the extension and retraction of front and rear bumpers 2 fitted to a motor vehicle. The movement of the bumpers may be powered by hydraulic or electrical means 3 and is controllable from within the passenger compartment. Leaving a parked vehicle with extended bumpers allows the driver to ensure that there is enough space to manoeuvre out of the parking space. When the driver wishes to leave he may retract the bumpers in order to make use of the additional manoeuvring space. <IMAGE>

Description

A MOTOR VEHICLE PARKING AID This invention relates to a motor vehicle parking aid.
When a motor vehicle is parked at the roadside, in a car park or any other area where other vehicles and other obstacles are situated nearby, the adjacent obstacles may be situated sufficiently close to the front and rear of the first vehicle to prevent, or at least make very difficult, the removal of the vehicle from the area.
The present invention provides a parking aid comprising one or more mechanisms for mounting on a vehicle and operable to cause the vehicle's bumper, or bumpers to be extended away from the vehicle body and subsequently to be retracted towards it. By extending the bumper or bumpers when parking the vehicle it is possible to ensure that any vehicles that subsequently arrive, are maintained at an increased distance from the vehicle. When it is wished to manoeuvre the vehicle the bumper or bumpers can be retracted in order to make additional manoeuvring space available to the driver.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the extension and retraction of the bumpers is driven by hydraulic or electrical means. The movement of the bumpers is preferably controllable from within the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.
Preferably the invention also includes a locking device operable to lock the extended bumper or bumpers in position so that they are able to retain their position during an impact.
The invention will not be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal side-view of a motor vehicle fitted with the parking aid.
Referring to Figure 1, a motor vehicle 1 has front and rear bumpers 2 which may be extended and retracted in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle by mechanisms 3. Each extension and retraction movement is controlled by an actuator 4 operable from within the passenger compartment.
The mechanisms 3 contains a locking device which locks the bumpers 2 in the extended positions so that they may retain their positions during an impact.

Claims (11)

1. A motor vehicle parking aid comprising one or more mechanisms for mounting on a vehicle and operable to cause the bumper, or bumpers of the vehicle to be extended away from the vehicle body.
2. A parking aid according to claim 1, wherein the mechanism, or mechanisms, is also operable to cause the bumper or bumpers to be retracted towards the vehicle body.
