Abstract
1367954 Vehicle bumpers; crash restraint bags REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 21 Oct 1971 [30 Oct 1970] 48941/71 Headings B7J and B7B [Also in Division F2] An energy absorbing device comprises a bumper 1 and movable supporting members 2 adapted to be carried by a motor vehicle body 3 so that the bumper 1 may be brought from a retracted inoperative position close to the body 3 to an extended operative position as shown, and expandable energy absorbing elements such as inflatable bags 5 carried in the bumper 1 and adapted to be released and expanded when the bumper, in its extended operative position, receives a shock, whereby they assume an operative inflated position 4 interposed between and acting against the bumper 1 and the body 3. The inflatable bags 5 each comprise a source of gas controlled by a release member responsive to shocks, such as an inertia fuse, and the respective inertia fuses may be calibrated for different deceleration values. The pressure within the inflated bags 5 is kept substantially constant by means permitting exhaust of gas in proportion to increase of internal pressure. These means may be localized weaker areas or apertures in the surface of the bags 5, or a number of valves calibrated to different pressure values.
