Abstract

224,738. Maurice, N. B., Frost, W., and Frost & Sons, Ltd., W. Dec. 11, 1923. Catgut substitutes.-A substitute for gut and similar animal products suitable for tennis and badminton rackets, tennis and garden nets, fishing lines &c. comprises ends or threads of silk, cotton, wool, ramie, hemp, jute or other fibre saturated with a solution of gelatinuous substance and rubber latex and twisted together and hardened or rendered water resisting by formaldehyde, chrome alum, &c. with or without vulcanizing. In one method of carrying out the invention a bath is prepared containing gelatine; glue, casein, albuminoids &c. or a mixture of these and fluid rubber latex containing 25 per cent to 32 per cent of rubber. An example of such a bath is : gelatine 3 to 6 ozs. ; water 1 quart; rubber latex 2 to 6 quarts. A number of ends or threads of degummed natural silk or other fibre are saturated in this bath at a temperature of 120‹ to 140‹ F. and are then twisted together. Either before or after drying the strings are treated with formaldehyde, chrome alum &c. The strings may also be vulcanized, as by applying a vulcanizer to the gelatine latex solution. The strings may be dyed previous to the above treatment, or a dyestuff may be added to the gelatine latex solution. According to the Provisional Specification acetic or formic acid may be used with the hardening bath.
