Abstract
There is disclosed a stocking having a toe end and, at the end opposite the toe end an opening for insertion of a foot/ leg of a wearer, wherein the inside of the stocking at the opening end region (4) is provided with a region of loose exposed threads (9) made of a bare elastomeric material and which are capable of frictionally holding the stocking on the leg of a wearer. The threads may be provided in a floated loop pattern. The stocking is used by non-ambulent patients to prevent embolism. <IMAGE>
Description
STOCKING
This invention relates to a stocking, and is more particularQy, but not exclusively, concerned with an anti-embolism stocking for use by non-ambulent patients in a hospital environment.
EP-0071818 discloses a thrombosis preventative stocking having a narrow strip knitted into the heel at a height of about 2 to 22 mesh rows and a width of a to h of the instep circumference.
According to the present invention there is provided a stocking having a toe end and, at the end opposite the toe end, an opening for insertion of a foot/leg of a wearer, wherein the inside of the stocking at the opening end region is provided with a region of loose exposed threads made of a bare elastomeric material and which are capable of frictionally holding the stocking on the leg of a wearer.
The threads of the elastomeric material are preferably provided in a "floated loop" pattern. This means that the elastomeric thread presents a series of loose loops of the bare material. Preferably, the open end of the stocking is provided with at least two circumferential threads exposing loose loops and preferably no more than 40 such circumferential threads. The circumferential threads should be between 2 and 40 courses from the top of the stocking and the threads continue down the stocking at intervals of several millimeters for a few centimetres, preferably no more than 5 cm.
The elastomeric material has the property that it stretches and recovers to its original form. Most preferably, the elastomeric material is that known as
c Elastane. Lycra Lycra is a branded Elastane.
Preferably, the stocking of the present invention is an anti-embolism stocking having a reduced control -opening provided in the toe region and an enlarged circumference at the instep. The heel may be reinforced by knitting in an additional thread, similar to the other threads.
The heel of the stocking may be provided with a distinguishable marker, for instance a coloured region which is knitted into the stocking. This may be between five and forty courses in length and, for example, 1 to 2 cms in width. This provides a size identification.
The novel arrangement of elastomeric threads in the stocking of the present invention means that the stocking does not require an elasticated support means or the like for holding the stocking to a leg of patient/wearer. This means that an anti-embolism stocking in accordance with the present invention does not exert any substantial tourniquet effect and, accordingly, the disadvantages associated with prior anti-embolism stockings are overcome by the present invention.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example only, to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a general view of an anti-embolism stocking in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged, partly broken-away view of the top opening of the stocking.
The anti-embolism stocking 1 shown in Figure 1 has a foot portion 2 and a leg portion 3. The top df the leg portion 3 has an opening 4 for insertion of a leg/foot of the patient. The stocking 1 includes a heel region 5 and there is provided a reduced control opening 6 at the toe end of the stocking 1. The heel region 5 of the stocking is provided with a distinguishable marker 7.
As shown more clearly in Figure 2, the inside surface at the opening end region 4 of the stocking is provided with a plurality of circumferential threads 8, each of which threads includes a plurality of exposed loose loops 9 of an elastomeric material, such as that known as Elastane. These relatively loose loops 9 of material frictionally secure the opening end region 4 of the stocking 1 to the leg of a wearer without requiring an elasticated portion which compresses the leg of a wearer and which may exert a tourniquet effect.
The loose loop effect is achieved by a change of pattern sequence during knitting. The bare Elastane thread is secured to the base knitted fabric by one needle in four. Where the bare Elastane misses three needles, it forms a loose exposed loop on the inside of the stocking fabric. The exposed loop clings to a patient's upper thigh without exerting pressure.
Moreover, no additional supporting means are required.
Claims (7)
1. A stocking having a toe end and, at the end opposite the toe end, an opening for insertion of a foot/leg of a wearer, wherein the inside of the stocking at the opening end region is provided with a region of loose exposed threads made of a bare elastomeric material and which are capable of frictionally holding the stocking on the leg of a wearer.
2. A stocking according to claim 1, wherein the threads of the elastomeric material are provided in a floated loop pattern.
3. A stocking according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the open end of the stocking is provided with at least two circumferential threads exposing loose loops and preferably no more than 40 such circumferential threads.
4. A stocking according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the circumferential threads are between 2 and 40 courses from the top of the stocking.
5. A stocking according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the elastomeric material has the property that its stretches and recovers to its original form.
6. A stocking according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the elastomeric material is
Elastane.
7. A stocking substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
