Abstract

The beveller has a cylindrical body portion 12 adapted to receive the end of a pipe to be bevelled and an end face 14 carrying a projection 22 adapted to be received in the chuck of a power tool e.g. an electric drill. An angled cutting surface 18, for example of a rasp type material, is located between the end face and the interior of the cylindrical body. Three surfaces can be provided. The device of the invention is inserted into the chuck of a power tool, for example an electric drill, the pipe to be bevelled is fed into the cylindrical body portion. Operation of the power tool causes an accurate and even bevel to be produced by the cutter of the device. Preferably the internal face of the cylindrical body has a plurality of splines 16 which locate the pipe accurately within the device and allow swarf to be cleared. <IMAGE>

Description

PIPE BEVELLER This invention relates to a beveller for pipes, in particular plastic material drainage pipes, which can be used on site.
Drainage, outflow and sewerage pipes are increasingly often made of plastics material and are joined by means of male and female couplings wherein the female coupling has an internal resiliant o-ring and the pipe is a push fit therein. To facilitate inserting the pipe into such a coupling, the edge is generally chamfered or bevelled.
However, when pipes are cut on site, in order to produce a chamfered edge it is necessary manually to file away material around the edge of the pipe. This is both time consuming and inconvenient. Moreover the bevelled edge produced is usually very uneven which can in extreme cases lead to leakage of the joint.
The invention seeks to provide a device enabling acurate bevelled edges to be produced simply and easily on site.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for bevelling the edges of a pipe which comprises a cylindrical body portion adapted to receive the end of the pipe to be bevelled, an end face carrying a projection adapted to be received in the chuck of a power tool, and an angled cutting surface located between the end face and the interior of the cylindrical body.
In use, the device of the invention is inserted into the chuck of a power tool, for example an electric drill, and the pipe to be bevelled is fed into the cylindrical body portion. Operation of the power tool causes an accurate and even bevel to be produced by the cutters of the device.
Preferably, the internal face of the cylindrical body has a plurality of splines which locate the pipe acurately within the device. A small clearance, for example 1 or 2mm may be left between the splines and the pipe body in use.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of a device in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a sectional view corresponding to Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, it can be seen that the device generally designated 10 comprises a cylindrical body 12 and a disc like end face 14. It is envisaged that the body and end face may be moulded in one piece, e.g. by injection moulding from a plastics material. Indeed, the plastics material employed may be the same as or similar to that used for manufacturing the pipes. As illustrated, the body 12 has six longitudinal internal splines 16. At the junction between the body 12 and the end face 14 there is mounted a cutting blade 18 at an angle corresponding to the desired angle of bevel. The cutting blade 18 is preferably made up of three or more segments 18a, 18b, 18c, each of which is independantly attached, e.g. by means of screws, to the device 10.A clearance 20 is left between each adjacent segment 18a, 18b, 18c, to allow swarf which may otherwise build up behind the blades to escape.
Similarly the clearance between the interior of the body 12 and the pipe (not shown in the drawings) which is ensured by the use of the splines 16 also allows swarf to escape.
The end face has a spindle 22 of a diameter convenient to fit in the chuck of a power tool which is held to the end face by a nut and washer arrangement 24.
In use, the spindle 22 of the device 10 is inserted into the chuck of a power tool such as an electric drill. The tool is then brought to the pipe to bevelled and the pipe led into the interior of the body 12 where it is spaced by means of the splines 16 so as to be accurately aligned.
As the pipe travels further within the body 12 the end of it reaches the cutting face 18 which, on operation of the power tool causes the edge to be bevelled. The orientation of the surface 18 is chosen to give the best result. For example, the distance x away from the interior of the cylindrical body 12 may be chosen so that the degree of bevelling of the pipe goes right across its wall thickness, e.g. 4mm. Similarly, the depth y of the cutter 18 may be chosen to give a desired depth of bevelling e.g. lOmm.
The cutting blade 18 may be a suitable rasp type blade and a particularly advantageous blade is akin to that sold commercially as a "Surform".
A further advantage in the use of the device of the invention is as follows. When pipes are cut on site, generally with a hacksaw, the ends are rarely square If the pipe is bevelled with the device of the invention and additional material is cut off the pipe end, the finished bevelled end will also be "square" thus enabling a leak free joint to be obtained without fail.
The device of the invention provides a simple means for producing bevelled ends on pipes on site.
