Abstract

Wood preservative takes a waste material namely used engine oil and recycles the used engine oil to produce a very effective preservative. Used engine oil presents problems of disposal to companies/organisations involved with servicing/maintaining motor vehicles. By recycling the used engine oil this forms the major constituent of a new product that is being proposed. In addition to the used engine oil other constituents have been identified which when added to the used engine oil offer prolonged protection. The oil based wood preservative is proposed for use e.g. on garden fences, sheds and pergolas.

Description

This invention relates to the proposed production of an Effective Oil Based Wood Preservative.
1.0 Introduction It is well known that if wood in the form of garden fences, sheds, etc is not protected from the weather then it will rapidly deteriorate and eventually rot.
The best form of protection is to use an effective wood preservative which does not have to be applied at regular intervals.
2.0 The Raw Material The raw material to be used in the production of the proposed wood preservative is available in large quantities.
The raw material is used engine oil after it has been discharged from the vehicle engine during servicing.
Used engine oil is a waste material which indeed presents problems of disposal for companies/organisations involved with the servicing/maintaining of motor vehicles.
3.0 The Production of the Proposed Oil Based Wood Preservative.
There are two main stages involved in the process, these are sub-divided further into sub-stages.
3.1 Stage 1 - Mechanical Filtration Mechanical filtration is required to remove foreign particles from the oil.
The used engine oil should be passed through a minimum of two different grades of filters.
The first filter should be a coarse grade to remove the bulk of the foreign particles. The second filter should be a fine grade to purify the oil. A magnetic/electromagnetic filter may also be necessary to remove metallic particles from the oil.
3.2 Stage 2 - Treatment of Filtered Oil After passing through the filtration process the oil will be of fairly low viscosity and its colour may vary slightly from batch to batch. The following treatments are listed to try and produce a standard for the oil based wood preservative.
Not all of the treatments may be essential, but can be implemented if necessary, the number of treatments implemented depend on the results of practical testing of the oil based wood preservative.
i) The reduction of viscosity by the addition of thinning agents.
ii) The addition of a fire inhibitor to make the wood preservative non-flammable.
iii) The addition of dyes/colourants to give different shades i.e. light brown, dark brown, etc.
iv) The addition of a fungicide to prevent the growth of fungi on the wood.

Claims (1)

  1. 4.0 Claims
    i) The wood preservative that is being proposed will consist largely of recycled engine oil.
ii) The oil based wood preservative when applied to garden fences, sheds, etc will protect against deterioration when exposed to harsh environmental conditions.
iii) The oil based wood preservative can be used on brand new garden fences, sheds etc.
iv) The oil based wood preservative can be used on garden fences, sheds, etc that have already been exposed to environmental conditions.
    v) The oil based wood preservative does not need to be reapplied for at least 18 months.
iv) The oil based wood preservative will not give off any toxic odours.
vii) The oil based wood preservative when used on new wood will prevent the growth of fungi on the wood.
viii) The oil based wood preservative will protect wood that has already been exposed to environmental conditions from fungicide growth.
