<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a method for the disposal and recycling of components from electrical and electronic devices and systems that on circuit boards, circuit boards or the like. B. resistors, capacitors or semiconductor components, the line connections are provided in the form of conductor tracks of the circuit board itself and / or of wiring which is optionally partially carried out through bushings of the circuit board or circuit board, the circuit boards or circuit boards made of optionally reinforced plastic material, namely thermosets, and at least partially z.
B. to form the conductor tracks can have a metal, in particular copper coating, in which method first the circuit elements and any externally accessible wiring mechanically, for. B. by planing, removing the connection connections from the circuit board or board and subsequently the circuit boards or boards are crushed.
Components of the type to be disposed of occur in relatively large quantities when renewing or replacing electronic devices and systems. At least some of the circuit elements, e.g. B. some capacitors, because of a toxic or otherwise harmful content or manufacturing material to be treated as special waste, for the disposal of which special precautionary measures must be observed. Since these circuit elements are connected to the printed circuit boards, the entire components, that is to say the printed circuit boards with the circuit elements, would have to be treated as special waste, for the disposal of which relatively high fees have to be paid according to weight and volume. There are still difficulties in preparing and operating suitable deposits for this special waste.
In Austria alone, an accumulation of at least 800 t of printed circuit boards per year is expected. In order to at least reduce the amount of waste and, above all, to enable recycling of the material of the printed circuit boards and circuit boards in the narrower sense, methods of the type in question are used. The circuit elements can be separated from the circuit boards with the help of rotating ones
EMI1.1
B. itself, however, at least so far protected that no harmful materials can escape from it. The circuit elements separated in this way can still, if necessary or economically sensible. sorted to separate them into "harmful" and "harmless" or reusable elements. Such sorting is relatively simple, for example, for elements of different sizes or weights.
In the further treatment of the base material of the printed circuit boards and boards, different paths have so far been followed after the comminution, each of which is either very complex and / or has other serious disadvantages. It has already been proposed to subject the plate material to a pre-comminution using a hammer mill and then to remove ferromagnetic particles and electrostatic classifiers from metal particles in an extremely complex process using magnetic separators, and then to further comminute, sieve and, if necessary, also to separate reinforced synthetic resins into glass fiber material and resin material. Such a system is extremely complex and not completely reliable.
For the recovered, recyclable resin and glass fiber material, the production costs are so high that the actual recycling is uneconomical and can only be viewed in terms of recycling that is supported by the correspondingly high disposal price for the devices.
For the disposal and recycling of components of the type mentioned at the outset, the use of other known processes for the separation of plastics-containing waste does not seem expedient either, or hardly applicable because of the high technical outlay of such separation plants, which is economically viable only with very large quantities of waste. Such a method would be known for example from DE-OS 41 21 808 for the sorting of plastic waste. According to this process, the wastes, which contain a high proportion of polyethylene due to pre-sorting and for example largely consist of plastic bottles on the one hand and films of the corresponding low-pressure polyethylene on the other hand, are first washed and then crushed into small pieces.
These pieces are passed through hydrocyclones in which heavier particles such as metals and other plastics are deposited on the lower reaches, whereas the polyethylene pieces, which contain mixtures of low-pressure and high-pressure polyethylene material, appear on the upper course and are thus separated. These pieces are then separated to separate high-pressure and low-pressure polyethylene guided over one or more air classifiers. The process therefore enables high and low pressure polyethylene to be separated and heavier parts, in particular metal parts and parts, made of another, heavier plastic to be separated. In any case, the process fails with composite materials and coated printed circuit boards.
Given the relatively high disposal costs for materials of the type mentioned at the outset according to the previous methods, there would be so-called thermal recycling, in which at most the calorific value of the material is used in a combustion process and the metal residues in a processable one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Slag accumulate, the cheaper way. The combustion of products of this type, however, are contrary to environmental protection laws, as it theoretically and at least in the event of malfunctions. a. could form dioxins. Apart from this, the residual material of the printed circuit boards and circuit boards is itself a higher quality material, its combustion. currently appears inappropriate.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a method of the type mentioned, which works with a relatively low system cost and enables disposal and recycling of the disassembled circuit boards and boards. In particular, a method is to be created in which the processing of the printed circuit boards and circuit boards is also possible in smaller companies and in which an intermediate product is obtained which can either be processed into new materials in the disposal company itself or can be delivered to corresponding processing companies in an easily transportable form.
The object is achieved in that the printed circuit boards or circuit boards with the wiring and lead-through residues are comminuted, in particular ground, into granules, granules or powder, which or that with the metal residues as an additive in the production of new components, in particular of pressed table products or pressed parts , made of the same, a similar or at least compatible with the base material, in particular an epoxy resin-based composite material optionally reinforced with glass fibers, is used.
It could be determined that the material in the shredded form, despite the metal residues contained therein, is suitable as an additive for many areas of application in the manufacture of new components. The metal content from the line residues is usually below 10%.
If the crushed material as an additive in a plastic, e.g. B. an epoxy resin used, which has the same basic structure as the resin used for the manufacture of the circuit boards, so because of the similarity of the materials result in particularly favorable conditions. Any glass fiber reinforcements and inserts such. B. hard paper inlays in the circuit board material are shredded and installed in the new material.
EMI2.1
of the new components or use these components in the core area of laminates, where they are fully protected from oxidation by the overlying laminates.
It is particularly expedient to use a method in which, if it is a material based on epoxy resin, only the resin is present on the surface, which can be achieved by appropriate manufacturing processes and / or by applying thin layers of resin to the surfaces before the pressing process can be achieved.
To the metal content in the generated. To reduce aggregates, a metal coating of the printed circuit boards or
Boards are removed before and / or after crushing with an etching solvent. This procedure has the additional advantage that when using a suitable solvent, not only is the metal coating detached, but also impurities, e.g. As dust, are removed from the surface of the circuit boards to be shredded and degreasing takes place. If the copper surface of the circuit boards by materials resistant to the etching solvent, e.g. B. so-called solder mask is covered, you will preferably use the etching solvent only after at least a pre-shredding of the circuit board has taken place.
Another possibility is to remove the circuit elements from the circuit board by means of the cutting tools used and / or by separate tools, e.g. B. rotating wire brushes, to remove the cover layer at least partially, so that parts of the metal surface are exposed and all the metal can now be removed via the etching solvent, the cover layer also merging into the etching solvent.
Only the treatment of printed circuit boards and circuit boards in the narrower sense has been described above. However, it is also possible to dispose of surface-mounted components together with them if, like many integrated circuits and semiconductor components, they have housings made of appropriate materials, i.e. thermosets or ceramic material, and the metal content is not too high or at least largely removed via etching solvents can be. Here you will preferably carry out a rough pre-crushing before the etching solvent or solvents are used.
Particularly in the last-mentioned cases, fractional treatment with etching solution known per se or the additional use of electrolysis processes are also possible in order to recover certain metal groups, in particular noble metals. After the treatment, the final shredding into the desired grain sizes takes place.
An etching solution based on copper chloride can be used as a solvent for a copper coating. Such an etching solution in the form of a hydrochloric acid copper chloride solution or ammonia
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Copper etching solution is in itself used for the treatment of printed circuit boards, where it is used to remove the copper that is not required and no longer desired from the originally full copper surface coating in the production of conductor tracks.
In the manufacture of printed circuit boards, in order to achieve clean wiring paths and above all to maintain a defined undercut on the edges of the conductor tracks, it is necessary not to use the etching solution until it is completely saturated with the copper to be removed. After use, the copper chloride containing the detached copper must be subjected to a complex recycling process. According to the invention, the etching solution obtained as a waste product in the manufacture of printed circuit boards and printed circuit boards, as described above, is only partially used with the removed copper from the printed circuit boards, which is thus used twice before it is reprocessed.
For the present purposes, it is sufficient if the copper coating is only largely removed and the etching behavior of an etching solution having a higher degree of saturation of copper has no disadvantageous consequences.
During further processing, the circuit boards or boards with the metal parts are preferably comminuted to a powder with a grain size of less than 0.1 mm.
In a preferred application, the comminuted material is used as a filler in a thermoset, in particular an epoxy resin, in the production of table pressed products or pressed parts in a quantity ratio of up to 50% by weight, preferably less than 35% by weight, based on the thermoset. The size of the filler content depends primarily on the required properties of the newly manufactured products. Another criterion is, however, the nature of the fillers used in the method according to the invention. This quality not only depends on the grain size and the metal content, but in some respects also depends on the starting material.
Printed circuit boards and boards have so far been made up of different elements. There are a.
Laminates made of hard paper and phenol, hard paper and epoxy, glass cloth and epoxy, metal-clad epoxy hard paper cores, each covered with a layer of epoxy with glass cloth, and other material combinations are known, whereby multilayer printed circuit boards are also common, which are produced by pressing structured prepregs . Such prepregs in turn consist of glass fabric, which is impregnated with epoxy resin in dried and anpolimerized form, so that it only hardens under the influence of heat during the final pressing.
As far as the method according to the invention has been described up to now, it is assumed that all printed circuit boards made from the different starting materials are treated identically and that the crushed powder material obtained, that is to say possibly a mixture of all of the basic substances mentioned, contains. With such a material mixture, you will normally choose the filler content in the new products in the lower range, i.e. at 30%.
However, it is now also possible, if the manufacturers of the printed circuit boards are known, or if this will be regulated in the future by regulations, to indicate and label the material composition of the respective carrier material of the printed circuit board, which would be possible, for example, by identification colors or embossing or embossing to sort the printed circuit boards according to their manufacturing materials before shredding, in which case the properties of these manufacturing materials could also be taken into account in the final processing and, for example, fillers with a high resin and glass fiber content could be used in a larger percentage for certain end products than fillers with a higher one Hard paper content.
Corresponding table press products or pressed parts can be produced and used in the broadest scope like the corresponding products made with other additives. Currently, in addition to the usual forms of use for composite materials, the replacement of aluminum and construction wood with appropriate products is currently available. An example of table press products are solder frames or
Building boards. Furthermore, pressed parts can easily be used as a replacement for aluminum molded parts and z. B. traffic signs, traffic control posts and other traffic control devices, but also parabolic dish-shaped reflectors for satellite antennas, wall coverings and. Manufacture like.
