Abstract

The invention relates to a top or cover for washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators or the like comprising a first member (12) having on the outside thereof a rebate (16) in which channel-shaped seats (17) are provided and extend vertically and terminate below in a re-entrant (18) and a second edge member (13) on the inside of which are provided resilient tongues (20) with a snap catch (21) designed to engage the said channel-shaped seats (17). <IMAGE>

Description

TOP FOR DOMESTIC APPLIANCE The present invention relates to tops for washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators and the like, and more particularly a top comprising a panel which is placed on and secured between two perimeter edge members.
The body of a washing machine, refrigerator or the like is normally finished off with a top or cover.
In the most traditional form of construction, the top or cover comprises body of enamelled or painted sheet metal or a laminated plastics material member or a panel which is fixed or at least partly set into a peripheral frame or supporting edge member. Such a form of construction is however rather complex and costly.
A top for washing machines, refrigerators and the like comprises a panel secured between two edge members which hook together in order to form a perimeter supporting frame has also been proposed. This form of construction is also relatively complex and has the additional disadvantage that once its components are assembled they can no longer be disassembled without damage. In fact one of the two edge members has catches which snap to secure the panel and the other has catches to snap to the former and assist in retaining the panel.
These tops are assembled in two stages, the panel first being clipped to one edge member and then the other member being snapped in place.
The object of the present invention is to provide a top or cover of the type in which a panel is secured between two edge members forming a peripheral of perimeter frame, which is of simpler construction, and more convenient and practical to assemble in a single operation, which can be dissassembled in order-to replace such components where necessary.
This object is accomplished through a particular configuration and arrangement of the snap connection means between the two edge members which can also be used for the selection of suitable components for assembly after pressing, with defective members being rejected.
According to the present invention there is provided a top or cover for a domestic appliance comprising a panel locatable and securable in a perimeter frame comprising two edge members moulded from plastics material and adapted to be snapped together, a first edge member having an inner surface on which the panel rests while the other edge member has a projection extending inwards in order to overlap the edge of the panel, characterised in that the said first member has on the outer side of each side thereof a rebate in which are provided at intervals, channel-shaped seats which extend vertically and terminate below in an undercut or reentrant and in that the other edge member has on the inside of each side thereof resilient tongues each with a snap catch, these tongues in use locating the channelshaped seats and the snap catch engaging the undercut or re-entrant in order to releasably secure the two edge members to each other and secure the panel between them.
The invention will be described further, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view from above of an appliance fitted with a top or cover according to the invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary perspective view showing part of two separate edge members; Fig. 3 is a partial cross-section of the separate members requiring assembly; Fig. 4 is a similar cross-section to that in Fig. 3, but with the members assembled; and Fig. 5 is a partial plan view of the assembled frame.
A rectangular top or cover for a domestic appliance or other, such as a washing machine is illustrated and comprises a perimeter frame indicated generally by 10 and a panel 11 secured in the frame 10.
Perimeter frame 10 is formed from two rectangular edge members 12 and 13, each moulded from plastics material and dimensioned so as to retain panel 11 therewithin, the members 12, 13 lying one within the other when assembled.
The edge member 12, which when connected with member 13 is the inner member, has surfaces or a surface 14 lying in a plane and the inner side of which is optionally supplemented by a grid of cross-members 15 on which panel 11 also rests and has a rebate 16 along each exterior side channel-shaped seats 17 forming tongue receiving recesses are provided in rebate 16 and extend generally vertically and terminate below in an undercut or re-entrant 18 see Fig. 2. Receiving housings 19 are also provided on the opposite sides of each channelshaped seat 17.
The other edge member 13 which is the outer member, has a projection 13a at the top which is designed to engage the top of the sides of edge member 12 and has a portion 13b projecting inwards for overlapping the upper edge of panel 11.
Downwardly extending resilient tongues 20 ending in a snap catch 21 are provided on the inside of each side of edge member 13, (see Fig. 2). Centering projections 22 are provided on the sides of each tongue 20 and locatable in housings 19.
In practice, for assembly of the top (See Fig. 3) panel 11 is placed on supporting surface 14 defined by part of edge member 12 and then second edge member 13 is mounted in such a way that its resilient tongues 20 and projections 22 are inserted in the channel-shaped seats 17 and housings 19 respectively of first edge member 12. By then applying a force on one or other or both of edge members 12/13 these are snapped together as a result of catches 21 of resilient tongues 20 engaging corresponding undercuts or re-entrants 18.
The assembled arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, from which it will be noted that panel 11 is secured between supporting plane or surface 14 and the re-entrant portion 13b of the top projection 13a of member 13, and that the assembly is secured by the interaction between resilient tongues 20 and undercuts or re-entrants 18.
This assembly can, however, be readily dismantled if the components need to be dismantled for any reason.
In addition to this, the assembled top or cover may also be equipped with means, (not shown) for mounting it on the body of the domestic appliance such as a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator or the like.

Claims (6)

1. A top or cover for a domestic appliance, comprises a panel (11) locatable and securable in a perimeter frame (10) comprising two edge members (12, 13) moulded from plastics material and adapted to be snapped together, a first edge member (12) having an inner surface (14) on which the panel (11) rests while the other edge member (13) has a projection (13a, 13b) extending inwards in order to overlap the edge of the panel, characterised in that the said first member (12) has on the outer side of each side thereof a rebate (16) in which are provided at intervals, channel-shaped seats (17) which extend vertically and terminate below in an undercut or re-entrant (18) and in that the other edge member (13) has on the inside of each side thereof resilient tongues (20) each with a snap catch (21), these tongues (20) in use locating the channel-shaped seats (17) and the snap catch (21) engaging the undercut or reentrant (18) in order to releasably secure the two edge members (12, 13) to each other and secure the panel (11) between them.
2. A top or cover as claimed in claim 1, in which two centering projections (22) are formed at the sides of each resilient tongue (20) and in which two receiving apertures (19) are provided at the sides of each channel-shaped seat (17).
3. A top or cover as claimed in claims 1 and 2, in which the supporting surface (14) of the first edge member (12) is supplemented by a grid of panel-supporting cross-members 15.
4. A top or cover as claimed in claim 1 and 2, in which one edge member (13) surrounds and contains the other edge member (12), and in which the said members have means for mutual centering and insertion.
5. A top or cover as claimed in claims 1 and 4, in which the edge members (12, 13) are rectangular frames.
6. A top or cover for a domestic appliance substantially as herein described with reference to the accompany drawings.
