Abstract

An electro hydraulic drive system allowing accurate finger-tip adjustment of planting spacing to be made on the move by adjusting tractor mounted controller 5 relative to the speed of the ground wheel measured by sensor 6 and the speed of the hydraulic motor 1 driving the planter unit measured by sensor 7. This results in greater accuracy in spacing and number of plants per acre (or hectare) be achieved without necessity to adjust mechanical drives. <IMAGE>

Description

VARIABLE SPEED ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC DRIVE SYSTEM FOR POTATO PLANTER The present invention relates to improvement to Potato Planter drive to make it infinitely variable throughout a planting range.
This is a combination of sensor which reads speed of ground wheel sending signals to a variable speed controller and a further sensor which monitors the speed of hydraulic motor and sends signal relative to this to controller, allowing the motor speed to be controlled accurately in proportion to the speed of the ground wheel to any pre-set level. This allows the planting spacing to be simply adjusted from the tractor seat by adjustment of control knob relative to read-out display on controller. The controller in turn automatically adjusts position of electro hydraulic valve to regulate speed of hydraulic motor driving planter belts to control spacing of potato tubers being planted.
The speed controller can also be incorporated as part of an electronic monitor unit which can indicate forward speed, area planted (in acres/ hectares), seed spacing and planting rate (in tubers per acre or hectare).
This invention allows much more variation and accuracy of control of seed spacing than existing systems of variable chain drives at present used in planters to achieve different spacings. Adjustment of spacing can be made on the move by simply adjusting spacing switch in relation to electronic monitor reading.
REFERRING TO FIG. 1 A normal arrangement of a belt and cup potato planter is shown with electro hydraulic drive incorporated.
This shows a sensor 6 which reads the speed of the ground wheel when machine is lowered and contacting ground and sensor 7 which reads the speed of the hydraulic drive motor.
The sensors 6 & 7 sends signals relative to speed, to speed controller 5 which in turn energises flow control valve 4 to adjust speed of hydraulic motor 1 relative to adjustable setting on controller.
The hydraulic motor 1 then drives the planter mechanism through chain drives and countershaft 2. Adjustment of spacing is carried out simply be adjusting switch on controller 5.
A further refinement of this system is to incorporate the speed controller in an electronic monitor panel which would also indicate operation of various functions and display information e.g. spacing of tubers, tubers per hectare etc.
The system uses both electrical and hydraulic power direct from tractor on which planter is mounted and the speed controller (monitor unit) would be mounted in the tractor cab in a position to suit operator's vision/control.
NOTE The planter shown is of the belt and cup type but the system would be equally applicable to any other type of planter unit.

Claims (6)

1. A potato planter comprising planting units carried on ground wheels when in work and including an electrically/electronic controlled hydraulic drive system.
2. A potato planter as in claim 1 having an electronic sensor reading ground speed relative to rotation of wheels and feeding pulses into speed controller with variable setting.
3. A potato planter as in claim 2 having an electronic sensor reading speed of hydraulic motor and feeding pulses into speed controller with variable setting.
4. A potato planter as in claim 3 having speed controller connected to flow valve feeding hydraulic motor and capable of being proportionally adjusted by controller to vary speed of hydraulic motor relative to forward speed of planter.
5. A potato planter as in claim 4 where hydraulic motor is coupled by drives to planter whereby adjustment of speed controller can vary speed of hydraulic motor and thereby vary spacing of planted potatoes infinitely over a selected spacing range.
6. A potato planter as in claim 5 where potato planter is coupled to tractor, utilising tractor hydraulic supply and electrical system to operate electro-hydraulic functions on planter.
