Abstract

Bead 14 has a metal skin 21 and may be of generally triangular shape with bevelled corners 15. The bead may comprise a composition comprising glass beads dispersed in an epoxy resin, cast onto a metal cover 21 which covers external surfaces of the bead 14 in use. The metal cover 21 may extend beyond the resin and glass composition to provide opposite skirts 22 which in use receive an edge of an aperture of a structure such as a door panel 11 to the edge of which the bead is secured by an intumescent adhesive bedding material 23. There are in use two beads which form between them a groove in which a panel such as a glass pane 13 is received for mounting same in the aperture. The bead may be secured by a screw or the like instead of adhesive. <IMAGE>

Description

A BEAD The invention relates to a bead, particularly a glazing bead which is used to secure a door or panel of glass or other material to a surrounding structure. Two-spaced beads may be used on the structure, the space between them defining a groove within which the panel fits or the structure may have a shoulder and a single glazing bead is provided spaced from the shoulder, the space between the shoulder and the glazing bead defining the slot for the panel.
Conventional material for a bead is wood although plastics materials have been used. When the structure is required to provide a fire resistance for a defined period, such as a half hour or one hour fire resistance dependent on the thickness of the door or panel, the question of the material of the bead becomes important. Thus it is important that material has a surface which is readily kept clean and is also hygienic.
According to the invention, there is provided a bead for mounting a panel in a surrounding structure, comprising a metal skin on its exposed surfaces.
The metal skin may extend to cover adjacent portions of the structure. The material of the bead within the skin may be of any fire resistant material, but it is preferred that the material comprises glass beads, for example in a resin cast on to the skin.
An example of a bead for mounting a panel in a surrounding structure and embodying the invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a transverse section through a glass panel mounted in a door using the bead according to the invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail of Fig. 1, to an enlarged scale, with the addition of an alternative fitting.
Referring to the drawings a door panel 11 has a rectangular aperture 12 which is of uniform width throughout the thickness of the panel 11. A glass panel 13 fits in the rectangular aperture 12 and is secured in position by beads 14 on both sides. The beads 14 are each of generally triangular shape with bevelled corners 15.
The two beads 14 and the glass panel 13 have a thickness approximately equal to the thickness of the door panel 11. Each bead 14 is identical, so only one is described hereinafter.
Surfaces of a bead 14 which are exposed when the bead is in position on the door panel 11 with the glass panel 13 in place are provided with a metal cover 21 which extends as a skirt 22 beyond the bead 14 and over the adjacent portion of the door panel 11.
A bead 14 is formed by casting a material comprising glass spheres in an epoxy resin on to the metal cover strip 21 and allowing the resin to cure. The curing causes the resin to shrink on to the metal strip and become securely affixed thereto.
The bead 14 can be secured to the door panel and/or to the glass panel by intumescent adhesive bedding material 23.
Fig. 2 shows an alternative method of affixing the bead 14 to the door panel 11, using a screw 25 inserted diagonally through the bead 14 into the panel 11, the screw 25 passing adjacent the corner of the glass panel 13.
The metal skin of the beading may be of plain steel, painted steel, stainless steel of any desired colour, copper, brass and aluminium, for example, and the type of metal is preferably chosen to co-ordinate with the adjacent door panel which may itself be of metal, for example it can have a matt or polished finish. The skin has no material cast on to it in the portion overlapping the face of the door and so provides a neat skirt overlapping the panel. The metal skinned glazing bead provides improved fire resistance and also has a surface which is readily kept clean and is resistant to germs. It is ideally suited to metal screen walling, for example as used in hospitals.
It will be understood that a a bead described herein has good fire resistance because it comprises a material of glass beads in a resin. The resin, preferably epoxy, is preferably cast on to the metal in the form of a sheet, which preferably acts as an outer protective layer for the material, thus enhancing still further its fire resistant properties.
