Description

(54) A GLAZING TRIM STRIP (71) We, INOUE GOMU KOGYO KABUSHIKI KAISHA a Corporation duly organized and existing under the laws of Japan, having its principal office at 16-30, 1chome, Chitose, Atsuta-ku, Nagoya-shi, Aichi-ken, Japan do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to a glazing trim strip for motor vehicle, especially for a direct glazing system by which a window opening in a car body is directly glazed using a bonding agent.
An object of the present invention is to provide a glazing trim strip which reduces the risk of damage to the car body including the window glass.
According to the present invention there is provided a glazing trim strip comprising (I) a configurated strip having a layer of relatively rigid synthetic resin and a metal foil layer intimately adhered to one surface of the resin layer or embedded within the layer adjacent said one surface, said configurated strip having opposite longitudinal side edge portions which are both disposed to that side of an intermediate portion of the configurated strip which is remote from the metal foil layer and (2) a protective strip of soft plastics material which is bonded to a longitudinal side edge portion of the configurated strip so as to overlie a surface thereof which faces away from the intermediate portion of the configurated strip.
In the accompanying drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views of two embodiments of a glazing trim strip for a car body window according to the present invention; and Figure 3 is sectional view illustrating part of a glazed window using the glazing trim strip of Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a glazing trim strip I is in the form of a band having a curved section with inwardly directed end portions, such an approximately C-shaped section which comprises a metal such as stainless steel foil la bonded to the outer surface of a synthetic resin layer Ib (as in Figure 1) or embedded in the synthetic resin layer Ib (as in Figure 2). Where the trim strip I contacts the window glass and those parts of the car body defining the window opening, protective strips 2 and 2' of soft plastics material are provided to prevent contact between the foil la, and the said parts of the car body including the window glass, the strips 2 and 2' being bonded to the remainder of the molding 1, outer surfaces of said inwardly directed end portions including said layer of relatively rigid synthetic resin and said metal foil layer. The ena portions have an anchor Ic and a bend Id, respectively. In the illustrated embodiment, the protective strip 2 is provided outside the anchor Ic and is positioned between the remainder of the trim strip and the car body, and the protective strip 2' is below bend Id and positioned between the remainder of the trim strip and the window glass.
The layer Ib of the trim strip may be formed of a synthetic resin which may be relatively rigid, e.g. an ABS resin, an acrylic resin, or a polycarbonate resin. The foil la is bonded to the outer surface of the layer Ib or embedded in the layer lb. The foil la bonded on the resin surface may be coated with a clear synthetic resin material, e.g.
polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate butyrate resin. The protective strips 2 and 2' may be formed of such relatively soft plastics materials as a soft polyvinyl chloride resin, a vinyl acetate resin, or an ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer. The protective strips 2 and 2' preferably have thicknesses in the range of from 0.5 to 2 mm.
The trim strip 1 of the structure described above may be integrally formed by, for example, plastic extrusion molding as known in the art.
Referring now to Figure 3, the trim strip 1 is attached to the car body 3 to hold the window glass 6 firmly in position.
A stud 4 having a T-shape is welded to the car body 3 and a resin or rubber clip 5 is provided for attaching the trim strip 1. The anchor Ic is placed into a suitably recessed area Sa of the clip 5 as the trim strip I is assembled into the car body 3. As a result, protective strip 2 of the trim strip 1 rests against the car body 3.
After the window glass 6 has been placed into a space between the trim strip 1 (protective strip 2') and the car body 3, a bonding agent 7, such as prepared from a polyurethane resin base or Thiokol (Registered Trade Mark; polysulfide synthetic resin rubber of Thiokol Chemical Corp), is applied between the window glass 6 and the car body 3. A bonding stopper 8 supports the window glass 6.
The above described trim strip preventing the generation of noise due to any vibrations while the vehicle is in use, also prevent damage to the window glass and the car body with the result that long years of trouble-free service is made possible.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: J. A glazing trim strip comprising (I) a configurated strip having a layer of relatively rigid synthetic resin and a metal foil layer intimately adhered to one surface of the resin layer or embedded within the layer adjacent said one surface, said configurated strip having opposite longitudinal side edge portions which are both disposed to that side of an intermediate portion of the configurated strip which is remote from the metal foil layer, and (2) a protective strip of soft plastics material which is bonded to a longitudinal side edge portion of the configurated strip so as to overlie a surface thereof which faces away from the intermediate portion of the configurated strip.
2. A glazing trim strip as claimed in Claim I, wherein the relatively rigid synthetic resin is an ABS resin, an acrylic resin, or a polycarbonate resin.
3. A glazing trim strip as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the metal foil layer is a stainless steel foil layer.
4. A glazing trim strip as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the metal foil layer is coated with a thin film of polyvinyl chloride resin or cellulose acetate butyrate resin.
5. A glazing trim strip as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the soft plastics material is soft polyvinyl chloride resin, vinyl acetate resin, or an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.
6. A glazing trim strip as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the protective strip has a thickness in the range from 0.5 mm to 2 mm.
7. A glazing trim strip substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 and 3 or Figures 1 and 3 as modified by Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
